When did you live in Old Town?

I love Old Town - lived right up the road for a while..

lived there 92-94 - right down the road from the masonic temple (falls church border).

don't get me wrong - SUCH a charming town, but the people were just so STUFFY - all gov't workers:):crying::frown:

g4e - re: tortillas - I am with you. I also pb hard with fajitas or soft tacos. :frown: blech... nasty stuff.

I found out the day I got back from Houston that I can't do pancakes. Had hubby take me to IHOP (wanted some eggs, sausage, and harvest grain and nut) and totally pb'ed on the cakes. :crying:

Hey now!!! :frown: lol

Actually, the cost of living is a scam. In NoVa, I was making the same pay and paying the same mortgage. I had state tax, which I don't have here, but here I have tons of other little taxes which make up for it!

For me, it's the same.

Only, in Houston I can ride a bike. In Manassas, I barely got out my door before I was heaving and huffing. I like the flat! :)

But, I've told DH if we both get fired, we're moving to San Antonio.

I like my LIFE in Houston, but the city is bleh.

I just could never get used to the heat. Lived there most of my life (27 years) and it never got any easier. And the HUMIDITY! Don't even get me started. :crying:

I'm guessing when you were here the cost of homes wasn't so bad...? When we moved here, it was freakin' insane. I can't believe what nearly a half-million WON'T buy you here compared to Houston. In Houston, if we paid there what we paid HERE, we'd be living in a McMansion. A NEW, BIG, NICE McMansion. Here we got 2200 square feet with a yard that extends less than 20 feet in any direction. We went from a mortgage of less than $1,000 in Houston to a mortgage of $2900 here (including escrow on both).

Certainly I feel you get more bang for your buck in Texas (Houston for sure) than you do many other places.

PJTP...Catching up and checking in! Hi!:crying:

Got my daily "wog" in this morning - ran farther than before, so I'm happy about that. Even sprinted the final block with DH and DDog - he beat me, but my competitive side is gonna work on that! :)

All the posts are great - thanks for all the good wishes for my appointment on Monday - I'm hopeful too. Still haven't heard back from opportunity #1 - don't know what's up with them, but if this is an example of how they treat their people, I'm not sure I WANT to work for them.

Have a university-sponsored lunch today - was supposed to be a picnic, but the early rain turned into a steady downpour, so we'll be inside...trying to figure out a way to skip it...I really don't feel like 'breaking bread' with this crew.

Getting an inside workout today - moving files from one rolling rack to another as part of our annual archive / purge process. Will help make up for the fact that I won't get a walk in at lunchtime.

Loving my "wogs" - now I seem to have developed an addiction for running togs - didn't have a lot of that stuff before I was banded. My knees wouldn't have survived me running 55 pounds ago, but they are doing just fine right now - as long as I give it a day in between.

Ready for the weekend...so happy it's Friday!:frown:

Some day I will have to see Texas...oh wait, I will next year when we meet IRL, right? Haven't heard diddly-squat about that recently.

Kat - the theater stuff sounds fun.

When you wrote about the handyman 'he had permed hair down his back', I had an image of this very hairy-backed man...you know what I mean? Like hairy toes or fingers (ICK!) he had all this hair on his back which was permed....

Deep fried dough just doesn't appeal to me...sounds donut-ish and Im not a donut gal. So if ever/when I make it to a place where this type of fare is common, I think I'll pass on that.

I'd like to say it's better than it sounds, but these days I find that things I USED to like are kinda ick for me now. It's funny how I will eat something now that I haven't had since before banding, and I'll say to somebody, "Omg, WHY did I like this??" So yeah, I probably wouldn't like it as much as I used to when I was the human garbage disposal.

:frown::lol:

Ahh...you were there at that magic moment. LOL

Small world.

Love the Masonic Temple.

And, I didn't live there. Me and my hoodlum friends would just hang out there. :) Loved Nick's - they let us drink there underage.

...maybe they were just scared? I dunno.

I found out the day I got back from Houston that I can't do pancakes. Had hubby take me to IHOP (wanted some eggs, sausage, and harvest grain and nut) and totally pb'ed on the cakes.

Me neither! I love pancakes, too. butter...syrup....mmmm...Haven't had more than two regrettable bites since Sept, 2007.

No, no...it was insane - don't get me wrong. I had a small townhome in Manassas and here I have a large corner lot and single family home.

I'm saying I get paid the same and the mortage (bigger house, yes) is the same payment. So, for me, there is no difference from my money situation here or there.

Even though it is a nicer home, it's still equalling the same $$$ each month/year.

Also, they're starting to push townhomes here BIG time. A 2-story down the road for me is going for $200,000 + and I say, "That's like VA!!!" Crazy. SFH's are still cheaper than that.

PJTP: ColoradoChick sent this to me as her "new favorite site." I don't know how she finds this stuff, but there's some good reading here!

It appears this guy responds to ads posted online (Craigslist?) in a rather Borat-ish way. Some of them are laugh-out-loud funny. I haven't gone through a ton of them yet, but it's VERY entertaining!

Warning: There are some "F" bombs and other colorful words in them, so read at your own risk.

Omg, I KNOW!! What's with THAT?? Never saw a townhouse in my life until I moved here, but when I visited last week, we drove past an area where they've built some! Used to be apartments or houses -- not even really condos, except maybe in town.

Guess maybe Houston is going the way of so many others and starting to scrimp on the land? That was the one thing Houston has/had plenty of was land. Well, then parking lots and strip centers... :crying:

I can't believe how many strip centers have died yet they have all those new ones waiting to fill up. Good ol' Houston. Gotta keep them illegals working, yanno... :frown:

Wow...is he normally that much of an a-hole?

I'm not sure I'd be that much of a good nurse. I can handle the blood and guts and stuff...but bedside manners when they're being prickish...? um no thank you.

Omg, buy her a mojito from me.

Guys are THE biggest wussies when they've got a COLD. I can't even imagine dealing with one in the hospital. :crying:

I'd be like, "Good thing there are nurses and doctors around so when I try to kill you, you might have a chance."

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
