Vitamin after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am new here and will have my surgery at the end of April.

I am looking into Vitamins for right after the surgery (chewable). I can't find a Multivitamin that includes Iron. I found one that has B12, B1, folic acid, copper, zinc and selenium. Do you guys now of one that also has iron? Also, how did you schedule your Vitamin intake? Calcium can't go with iron, but you have to take calcium 3 times a day, right?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi. I take the PatchMD gastric sleeve multivitamin plus patch. It’s sold on this website when you click on store. I supplement B-12 and Biotin (for hair). Just had my bloodwork done. I’ve been in the Patches since October and my bloodwork was perfect, including Iron. Hope this helps. 🌻

I like the trader joe's adult chewable multi Vitamin. It has Iron, but I think generally you would probably need to take more iron than any multivitamin would contain, so you may want to look into a separate source. Keep in mind that in addition to not taking iron with Calcium it also can't be taken with any antacid you may be prescribed post surgery (usually you will be on the antacid for 6 months post surgery. Both of which are meant for an empty stomach, which for me means that I wind up taking the Iron at night right before bed, rather than take the iron in the morning, then the antacid 30 minutes later, then Breakfast (shake) 30 minutes after that.

Thanks for the answers. I haven't heard about the antiacids yet. I will ask my surgeon about it.

I take both the Trader Joe's chewable @aNYCdb mentions and Centrum chewables. The TJ ones are more complete, but they upset my stomach more. If my stomach isn't feeling 100%, that's when I do the Centrum Chewables.

I found something I like. I will use a Bariatric Complete multivitamin (chewable) I have to take only once a day in the morning and then Bariatric Advantage calcium citrate chewy bites I take 3 times a day for lunch, snack and dinner.

I take Iron as a separate pill as whatever iron they may use in a multi is the cheapest least absorbed form available and you will likely need to supplement it anyway; likewise any Calcium in the multi I consider to be a throwaway.

I take Iron with the multi (when I take the multi - they're only a 2-3 per week thing for me now, the iron is daily) and then calcium citrate at lunch (if needed) and dinner.

Please take your Vitamins, there are many companies, many formulations, but you are risking your present and future health if you don't. If you can't decide on your own , ask your nutritionist, ask your bariatric practice, ask your PCP if all else fails ask on Bariatric Pal, but *you* matter!. We all want *you* with us for a very long time[emoji14][emoji14][emoji14]!!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
