Hello everyone. I’m Ashley and I’m scheduled for my RNY on 3/21/18. Super nervous and don’t feel prepared at all.

Don't be overly nervous, that's what we're,here for, to help you through it all. Glad to see you have a firm date. Where are you located & where are you having your surgery?. Please tell us anything you want to share, we all would like to be your friends. We have anything from newbies, to people who have done their prerequirements and are waiting for their date, people who have recently had their surgery, and finally seasoned veterans who have been through it all and only are too happy to mentor the rest of us. So any questions,? Somebody here will have an answer and usually a very good one. So welcome and we wish you a safe happy WLS journey.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery. At your stage, I would recommend three things.

1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.

2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.

3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

My surgery will be at Oakland Hospital. My surgeon is Dr.Matthew Weiner. I originally found him through his YouTube channel. I am located in Michigan. My date is set yes but waiting to hear back from insurance which they don’t think is a problem at all so they went ahead and scheduled me. Are any of you doing a YouTube journey series. I’ve started but my video is private atm just because until I have the surgery no one really knows. My fiancé and my mother know but that is it right now. Not sure how I feel about telling people. I’m really struggling there. I feel like I’m not prepared in the sense of having the things I need. I am thinking of choosing the Celebrate Multivitamin. Any opinions or reviews from anyone taking them is more than appreciated. And yeah I just don’t want to be in a mad dash to get thing I need right before surgery. Also been trying to decide what my lifestyle of eating will be after surgery. I’ve decided to be a lacto-ovo vegetarian. And I know my fiancé and some family won’t support that fully or will make harsh comment and doubt my decision whiling I’m struggling with. So that’s where I’m at in my journey.

I def will be taking photos here rather soon and I try to walk as much as I can. I have a orthopedic injury that restricts my walking so that is extremely limited at the moment. We are hoping with weight loose it will take a lot of the pressure off my joint and help with arthritis. My surgeon is ok with caffeine. I only drink coffee and have never been a soda drinker. I have been trying to cut cabs now just to get in that mindset.

I have had 2 knee replacements 2nd is still giving me grief over a year old so I know a little about orthopedic impediment. Dr Matthew Weiner, ooweee you went for the Big Guns, I love his videos, I'm leaning a lot less on being a carnivore, it just doesn't agree with me. I'm almost always here, if you can stand a slightly benighted Buckeye who should be old enough to behave but doesn't always, I'm 72, if I'm in my 2nd Childhood I should be having more fun. Life is a funny old thing but I'm committed to live it until I die.

I shattered my ankle and broke my leg in 2015. I have no range of motion and only thing I can no do to get some relief is have an ankle fusion. Which with me being younger the doctor said to hold off as long as I could. So I manage with large doses of gabapention which I hope to ween off a lot of that with this surgery.

I had repeated svulsion fractures of my left ankle so I've hobbled that road also. Never got mine fused but I should have, and worse luck same leg as the cranky knee and I have developed lymphedema in that leg. But it still holds me up but I hope to help it by asking it to hold up less weight.

Yeah that is my hope as well. Less weight less problems. I have three plates and 21 screws holding my ankle and leg together. That is my biggest hurdle to keeping weight off now. Since my injury I’ve put on 100 lbs. I was extremely active and now can’t do anything. Hope all that changes here soon

I’m also an RNY newbie from MI—GO BLUE! My surgery is scheduled for April 9th and insurance approval all done! Nutrition class next week and then I just wait! So glad it’s finally here!

Hi Tuckersmom from one of those evil Buckeyes South of you. Where in Michigan do you hail from? Now there's a Midwestern term, most everyone else says "where do you live?"or something close to that! We are Middle America, no pretensions like the Easterners, we don't say "you all" like Down South, we are common clean- living folk who care for our neighbors and neighborhoods. We tend to be loving friendly caring people. Sound like I should be a travel folder, ah but remember like the ads--- you're "Pure Michigan!"

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
