Lower BMI and pregnancy

Recommended Posts

Hello! I have a few questions about having a baby after the gastric sleeve. When I have my sleeve, I will be at about 225 pounds to start, with a goal weight of 150-160. If I hit that goal weight earlier than a year, say like 6 months for example, then would it be ok to start trying for a baby then? Everything I have read says that you should wait to hit your goal weight, so it wouldn’t necessarily take a year to two years for everyone?

Super interested to hear any responses you get on this. I’m likely to be about 200-205 on surgery day (I’m 211 now and 9 days out and I’ve been dropping pretty steadily with liquids only) my main motivation in pursuing WLS has been to start a family. I was told 18 months but that sounds SO long but I’m willing to do what it takes to have a healthy pregnancy. My ultimate goal would be 130-140 so we have the same weight loss goal. Good luck to you!

I’ve actually had the surgery now and I’ve talked to my doctor about this. The first one or two months, it is dangerous to get pregnant because you are taking in so few calories. If you get pregnant after that, the issue is not safety as much as is it that your weight loss will stall. So, if you are close to your goal weight, you are good to go. My NUT also said that there are foods you can eat that are still healthy, but higher calorie. They know that I am about to be 38 so I can’t afford to wait two years. We will start trying this winter, which will be almost 8 months after my VSG.

Age: 37
Height: 5’6
Starting BMI: 37
VSG: 4/16/18
Starting Weight: 241
Surgery Weight: 229
Current Weight: 213 (17 days post op)
GW: 160
MFP: Fit4LifeAR

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
