58 and getting gastric sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

Many people in the forum talk about how easy it is to recover when you’re young. Well past young at 58 and wondering how the recovery will be. One thing that is an advantage is that I walk 10,000 to 15,000 steps everyday.

I'm 53 and about to be sleeved as well! I don't get that many steps in a day now, but when the weather gets better, that beagle is getting a workout!

I was 58 when I had my VSG. Best thing I ever did for myself. Don't worry about your age; and having the surgery may add to your longevity, whereas being overweight won't. Enjoy the journey.

I was 54 when I had my surgery... no issues whatsoever. It will add years and happiness to your life.

I am 56 and had a bypass 3 weeks ago. I had open surgery. I was up walking gently the next day and off my pain meds that night, and was first of my cohort to leave the hospital.

Your fitness will benefit you greatly. And us wise ones, our life experience gives us an edge too!

I had the bypass on 12/13/17, and i’m 70. Recovery has been a little more difficult than I imagined, but i’m I’m improving everyday. I had a hiatal hernia repair two years ago, and this was certainly harder.

If I was 58 years old, I would have no hesitation in getting the surgery.

60 had the sleeve late August. So far no problems. Walked after surgery, no pain meds needed and no complications. Getting my liquids the first two weeks was my most difficult thing.

I am 60 and just had surgery on Jan 2 and I had a really tough couple of days. I’ve never felt so awful in my life! I was nauseous and hungry at the same time. I felt really weak and light headed. Plus I had a splitting headache. The worst might have been the extremely dry mouth I had. I had to pull my lips off my teeth and I could barely talk. My blood pressure was and still is high. I’ll see my pcp next week to follow up on my blood pressure and I’m going to ask if she thinks it was the anesthesia that affected me. I recovered fairly quickly though and today I feel great. Still have hunger pangs and food cravings and high bp. Not sure age has much to do with it.

I had it done last year in my 50s and had no issues at all. No pain. Back to work in 5 days. (I work from home). I was tired for the first month but, other than that, It was physically not hard. As others have said, it was a good thing for me to do and I only wish I'd done it sooner.

I am inspired by all you folks:) I'm 45 and I felt like a senior citizen at the seminars...lol.

I had a super easy time compared to a couple of gals in their 20's and 30's at the hospital.

Walking is a HUGE advantage, I think. I'd been doing 15,000 steps a day for weeks on the day of my surgery, and it was a super easy recover for me.

Could just be different physiology, but I really think the walking helped.

I had surgery at 45 I'm 49 now. I know everyone's pain level is different. Compared to giving birth to a child, Bariatric surgery was easy to bounce back from.

Hi! I’m 62 and had the sleeve on January 2. I still have pain in my gut, but it’s not too awful. I still take 1 or 2 pain pills per day. I want to make it clear that I have autoimmune issues that have me feeling not so great too. When I first woke up in the recovery room I had regret because the pain was intense for me. The other issue I had was when I got to my room and i asked for pain meds I waited 1 1/2 hours until they were administered, which in my mind was totally unacceptable! (And it was not a case where it wasn’t time for them). This caused me unnecessary anxiety and more pain because it was not under control. I would think that because you walk daily you should have an easier time of it. Good luck on your journey.

I'm 62, had the sleeve on 10/24/17 and no issues recovering. The dry mouth is awful right after surgery and sipping is hard at first due to swelling but it improves quickly after that. Use biotene mouth swabs. For nausea ask the anesthesiologist to give you a scopolamine patch before surgery - works like a charm. For pain ask for acetaminophen 1000mg in the IV - I would have called anyone a liar if they told me tylenol would work that well but it really did. You will be tired for about 4 weeks and the biggest hurdle is getting enough fluids - stay on top of that from the beginning. Sometimes you can be confused about the difference between acid reflux, hunger pangs and an empty stomach - acid reflux can feel like hunger. Good luck - and see you on the other side.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
