Had a sleeve by doc had us avoid gum as well. There's 2 main reasons: first is the risk of accidentally swallowing it and it getting stuck. Second is that the act of chewing is sending signals to your stomach to preapre for food. Although it may be different between people it can lead you to feeling hungry when you really aren't. I had horrible dry mouth or bad tastes in my mouth with low carbing after surgery. I just went with some sugar free mints when needed and avoided the gum.

Just to clarify, if someone were to swallow their gum, it wouldn't plug anything up or block anything past the esophageal sphincter. Stomach acid would make short work of it. Also, the act of chewing signalling the stomach to produce extra acid can lead to heartburn.

I was told no gum chewing for the same reason as no straws (gas). I don't miss it as much as I thought I would. I carry dental floss and tic tacs instead (used to habitually chew gum between snacks/meals).

My Dr said gum is fine once you are healed up. It’s not going to block anything and if swallowed stomach acid will dissolve it

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
