Anthem BCBS 6 Months Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I'm just a little worried about the 6 months of pre-op dieting. According to my hospital's insurance specialist, some insurance providers are now denying people if they don't lose a pound per month or even gain weight during their 6 months of pre-op dieting. I've completed 6 months of dieting, however I did gain weight and lose weight irregularly. I'm currently a professional student living about 600 miles away from my surgeon so I'm just trying to make sure I get everything done & keep to my tight schedule!

Is there anyone with Anthem BCBS that can offer a little insight on what is expected?

Thanks! :)

I have BCBS as well I'm also doing the 6 month weightloss plan I wasn't told anything like that I think they expect for our weight to fluctuate...I'm only about to be on month 5 come January. But as long as you have done everything you were told everything else should fall into place and you should get your approval.I'm worried about the approval process as well but I just been trying to stay positive about the whole situation...goodluck :)

I have BCBS and I was approved within 24 hours and I gained a whopping 5 LBs my 5th month in my pre-op appointments.

Don’t worry so much they look at initial weight as a factor for approval and you can call the insurance company to get very specific details of what you’re required to do to ensure you get approved.

Not sure what your company wants by my BCBS NY only wanted psych evaluation, 6 months of PCP weigh-ins and medical clearance from primary physician and like I said my approval was completed with 24 hours and I was sleeved 1 week ago 12/22

I have BCBS MN, and they told me at the beginning as long as I am the same weight or less on the final meeting then you’ll be fine. If you gain weight before your surgery they said it could get postponed but I think that’s only if you gain weight on the pre op diet.

I also gained 10 lbs within my 6 months of visits but I lost it all before the meeting with the surgeon and was fine [emoji5]

That's exactly what I needed to hear! I'm hoping to knock out the holiday weight gain before my final weigh in.

I have Anthem BCBS and also had the 6 months of medically supervised weight loss. Anthem BCBS did not require me to lose a certain amount of weight nor did they advise that I could not gain weight. In fact, during the 6 months I'd lost about 6lbs and then gained 4 of it back. However, of the 4 I gained, I lost 3 of that when my paperwork was submitted. I was approved the exact same day. I had Gastric Bypass on December 18th.

I have Anthem BCBS also and on month 4 of 6 - lost 8 pounds. How long after you completed the 6 months was your surgery scheduled?

After my 6 months was done, they scheduled me to meet with the surgeon that week. Then the day you meet with the surgeon you schedule your surgery. The whole process for me only took about 3 weeks.

I wish this was the case for me. I have BCBS Anthem NY. I did my 6 months, all losses, got my evals and everything. My paperwork was sent to them 1/5/18. I've called EVERY day and as of this morning, 1/15/18 it is still "pending". I'm so aggravated!

I had Anthem BCBS and didn't have a requirement to lose anything - but my surgeon had a requirement that we couldn't gain. I think I lost maybe 6-8 lbs over the 6 months but I did have at least one month with a gain. I was approved farily quickly (about 2 weeks). It might also depend on how your physician/program writes it up. I had to submit food and exercise logs for the whole 6 months for my program so going into it they clearly were showing that I had given it a good effort. Not saying that makes an approval guaranteed - but my program certainly went overboard with the paperwork they sent in to Anthem.

I got my approval on January 15th! Now I'm awaiting clearance from the pulmonologist because of cpap compliance. I have insomnia so some nights I would take it off before I hit the 4 hour mark and all that is counting against me, which I had no idea about. I have an extremely mild case of apnea. .5 or less "incidents" per night, yet I'm stick waiting to schedule while he's out on vacation. [emoji35]

Congratulations!!! It's such a huge step :) Hopefully your pulmonologist comes back from vacation soon and gives you clearance!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
