Are Gastric Bypass and Gastris sleeve incisions the same?

Recommended Posts

I don't really know the answer to this, but I would imagine the one they pull the stomach through (in the VSG) might be a bit bigger. As far as the ones they use to put their tools, lights, etc, through, they're probably about the same (I think I had around seven of them altogether)

From what I’ve seen they are similar. I had the sleeve and have 5 very small scars that look like this “-“ little horizontal dashes [emoji5]

the people I know who had bypass also have 5-6 in a similar shape.

Some surgeons use 3 entryways and some use 5 or more, really depends on the patient and surgeon. There are some surgeons that offer SILS, which is a single incision.

I had five as well. The location may vary a slight bit based upon your own body shape and your surgeon’s preference.

I have seven, but had my hiatal hernia fixed, too. Might be the difference?

I had about six incisions. I think it varies from patient to patient... And Surgeon.

Just wondering, are the same incisions made with bypass and sleeve or are they different?

Usually, the size of the incisions is 10mm and 5 mm (trocar size).

In a VSG I usually perform 4 incisions, in a bypass 4-5 incisions depending on the patient and surgical needs. Some fellow surgeons feel more comfortable with 6 incisions.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
