I had my vsg surgery on 11/20/17. It is now 11/24/17 and I haven’t been able to keep one thing down since surgery. Instantly started throwing up after trying first couple sips of room temp Water and I’m dry heaving/throwing up after everything else I’ve tried. Today is my 2nd day in a row to ER thinking I might die. I’ve been admitting and am NPO until tomorrow morning. Anyone have any experience with this? Please tell me this will pass.

Are you telling me they released you from the hospital while you couldn't keep anything down?

That sounds idiotic, and like a surefire way to have you just return it the emergency room (which you did)

I'm a little surprised they released you at all as well. My doctor was about to keep me another night if I couldn't keep liquids down. But I did find I have to be sitting straight up or standing to drink anything at all or it comes right back up. I'm hoping you get better soon!

Nothing by mouth doesn't sound right at all. That could lead to dehydration, and you are probably already on your way there since you have been throwing up. You need fluids, I just can't believe they would advise you otherwise. I strongly urge you to put in a call to your surgeon's after hours answering service and let them know that you just had surgery and give them a few details, including that your situation is an emergency and that you would like to hear back from your surgeon asap.

I know that I have had to leave a message for my doctor(s) a couple of times in my life, and I was glad they had the live answering service during after working hours. My doctor has always called me back within a couple of hours.

Im guessing they hydrated you while you were in the ER? If so you shouldn't have any issues today/tonight with dehydration. Did they give you a shot for nausea? Im so sorry you are having such a tough time. No worries, it will pass and your new life will begin [emoji4] PS: When you go back make sure they give you: a leak test, 2 bags of fluids and anti-nausea. You may need phenergan (anti nausea) suppositories until your tummy can tolerate fluids.

Ask for a patch for nausea - it works great.

I’ve been admitted to the hospital. Getting lots of Fluid and nausea meds. I’m also having this horrid pain in my left shoulder. Gas pain maybe? Surgeon doesn’t suspect a leak because all of my vitals look great. I’m hoping tomorrow morning things will go down a lot easier. Thanks for replying everyone! Makes me feel a bit better!

Left shoulder pains normal. Could be gas, or from a hiatal hernia

Leaks are also incredibly improbable, so I wouldnt worry about that until the surgeon is

So glad to hear you are getting fluids in the hospital and that you talked with your surgeon. And yes, the left shoulder pain could be gas.

When you are drinking Water, try drinking it at different temperatures, for me and many others, ice cold water was/is the only way to keep it down after surgery. I literally have to load my cup with ice and drink water like that, and I am a year out of surgery. Getting liquids is so important, and it's really strange how different drinks and foods (when you get to eating foods) will taste differently to many of us after surgery.

When you get back home, try different things and see what you like so you can get those liquids in. Some that I did well with: Powerade Zero, Lemonade Crystal Light and my favorite, iced Decaf regular tea. Also liked iced peppermint tea. But for me, everything has to be ice cold, or that nausea feeling will hit me. That said, I am fine with really Hot Drinks like herbal tea and coffee.

I hope some of these ideas are helpful and I hope that you have a speedy recovery!

x2 on this especially the variety of drinks.

Water (and even crystal light) suddenly tastes disgusting to me. Its like salt water almost, and I used to drink crystal light religiously preop. Powerade zero is now a staple until I find some better tasting fluids

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
