Mine was at North Florida Regional... sorry I can't comment about Shands but I did have my daughter there and had a great experience with L&D

Awww I’m glad she had a good experience. I actually work in the NICU there. I’m still paperwork process and biting my nails. Lol

Yes, I had surgery (RNY) with Dr. Friedman at Shands very recently. I thought he was very good. Not a huge fan of the Nurse Practitioner, but everyone else is wonderful. The nutritionist is great.

Hi Julia!
I just had surgery last Friday (sleeve with Dr. Friedman). Haven’t met with the NP yet. Good experience so far. Are you happy with your decision? And how are you feeling? [emoji4]

Congrats! I hope you are feeling well and recovering fast. I think I am happy with my decision. I am still trying to get over the food addiction so its been tough a lot. Still trying to work our some kinks (i have GOT to stop drinking so fast!), but I am happy with the results. I am off of all my medications (was taking 5 different meds before surgery) and have noticed I can do things I couldn't do before. I am actually no longer scared to go on walks with people because I know I can do it and wont have to make up an excuse to stop for a rest!

Yea, I couldn't wait to actually sink my teeth into something. I heard of some people chewing ice cubes to help with that, but i have noticed cold liquids still upset my stomach, so I never tried ice cubes. Yes, let's stay in touch!

How did you like NF? I am looking at both Shands and NF.

Hi Linita, I had my surgery March 30 at Shands. Dr. AYZENGART performed my gastric sleeve. He is in with Dr. FREEMAN. They have an awesome team who work well in tandem. Shands is a teaching hospital. All of the residents assigned to my case and came and introduced themselves and answered my questions. The whole experience was wonderful.

That’s amazing. I’m glad you had a good experience. I had my surgery on February 23, and I have zero complaints. It’s been great. I actually work there and can say the same for the hospital in general. Did you have sleeve or bypass?

I had the sleeve. Actually, my oldest son has viral cardiomyopathy and spent several months at Shands. Dr. Aranda and the cardiology unit staff have all been magnificent. He now has a VAD and Dr. Freeman did his sleeve a little over a year ago to lose weight for a transplant. It's been slow going for him.
I just saw Dr Ayzengart yesterday for my first follow up and it went great. I'm down 14#. The staff on the surgical floor are all awesome. I received top notch care in the beautiful, spacious new building. Kyle is awesome, too. You can see he loves what he does! I send him an email with a question and he promptly answers back. The surgery went well. A cake walk compared to my 1st c-section 36 years ago! The worst part was the ride home upon discharge. I live in the panhandle. About hour 3 I was miserable with gas. I mean, by time we got to Carrabelle, i had to get out and walk but my level of miserable(ness) was too far gone with gas. My chest hurt right up into my shoulders. The last 70 minutes was just excruciating. When I got home I could barely walk, I hurt so bad. Other than that, all is great in my world. My point is, you can be very proud to work for such a magnificent organization. I worked in healthcare my whole adult life. That to me is important. Thanks! Congratulations on your surgery. I hope you continue to do well. All the best, Joann L.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
