Any Regrets?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting ready to schedule surgery and wondered if there's anyone out there who regrets having the procedure or knows someone who does. For any reason - not worth the cost, disappointed in results, harder to stick with than expected, medical complications, etc.

Any regrets that faded over time?

A few years ago I contemplated getting lasik for vision correction, but after reading too many messages from people who ended up worse off than before I was scared off - even though my brother had it done.

I'm not even a glass half empty sort, but one who see the spots on the glass that need to be cleaned. My secret to happpiness is low expectations. If I expect the worst I'm pleasantly surprised when things go okay!:rain:

I'm 19 months out........not one little regret. And even tho I've still got a ways to go to goal, if I never lose another pound after today, I will still have so regrets.

I don't regret it at all. Its been the easiest weight loss to date. That being said, I wish I had committed more to not drinking alcohol and exercising more early on. I'm down 65 lbs in 16 months. I 'm sure I would be at goal already if I had done those things. Good luck.

I regret not doing it sooner.

I regret not capitalizing more on the first 6 months, when is when the weight was really flying off.

I tell people who ask - even when I'm at my worst, which has to be somewhere around hunched over the kitchen sink wishing that the PB would just come so the pain will stop, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I second that emotion.

I also regret that I can't eat a Big Mac anymore...but then did I ever really need it anyway?

This has not always been an easy road but it has always been a fulfilling road. It's quite a journey!

I have had tons of complications and a very difficult journey and I wouldn't trade the journey for the world. But I have a friend that depends purely on the band and doesn't work it in the least. She hasn't lost a thing except for the few pounds when she is around me for a weekend.

You'll get out what you put into the band, pure and simple.

I was banded on Oct 11th. I don't regret doing it but you need to know you will get bummed out from time to time. Last night I was feeling blue because the weekend is here and I don't have "going out for dinner" to look forward to. I also felt like I could never eat pizza again. Not true! My husband went to Pizza Hut and brought me home a thin and crispy cheese pizza. We cut one piece up and found that 3/4 of a piece fits into a 1/4 cup. So that is what I eat and I was EXTREMELY full and satisfied! I have to remind myself that food is less important than my health!!!!

Good luck!

Luvmydogs, I was worried when i read you got your band on the 11th and you are already eating pizza. Are you on a post -op diet? I was still on liquids seven days out. Be careful, you are still healing. Donna

I'm not banded yet, but I'm scheduled for Nov. 16th.

I'm curious how your friend doesn't lose weight with the band. Doesn't it constrict her flow so she can't possibly eat the way, or as much she used to? What are the secrets to optimizing your weight loss with the band?

My Dr. said to work my way up to solid food at my own pace. She said they use to make it very regimented for the first couple months but have found it to be ok if the patient experiments one food at a time.

I do wonder why I am able to tolerate solids so soon??????? Maybe I won't once I get my first fill.

Thanks!

She's a dear dear friend of mine, she used to be my employer so I've known her for a long time. She was banded six weeks after I was. She has the same doc as me. Same instructions, same everything. She eats her 800 calories in the right foods and then adds another couple of thousand calories in crap food.

With the band, if it goes through a straw it will likely go through you band. Ice cream, chocolate... all that stuff will go right through. I thought I was a carb addict, my addiction is nothing in comparison to hers.

She doesn't eat the right foods, she doesn't eat a solid Protein before eating the crap (meaning she makes sure the crap will go right through), she won't chew well so she gets stuck all the time and claims she can't tolerate a fill. I was really honest with her the other day and told her that I don't think she should get a fill either (even though she seriously needs one) because I don't think she can give up her "quantity" of food yet. She became upset and told me that wasn't true. I didn't push it, I just dropped it.

A couple of weeks later she said she thought it through and I might be right yet she hasn't done anything about getting a fill. She just plain isn't ready.

I lost weight by busting my butt. I kept calories at 600 daily and did hard cardio at least one hour a day. I still do the cardio, now it's just habit. I'm maintaining but I think I want to lose another 10 or so, so I need to get my butt in gear again.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
