I would think it's variable. I'm sure that the kind of calories also make a difference. Example, calories from Protein as opposed to calories from sugar.

What does your plan say?

Everyone's plan is different. I took in a totally different number of calories at a week out, a month out, three months, six months, goal, etc. some plans specify calorie counts some don't.

You trusted your surgeon to cut you open, trust your surgeons dietary advice.

My nutritionist told me 800-900 calories for the first year and less than 80 carbs per day.

There are days I can eat more than that and days I don’t even come close.

At my Drs. Appt. yesterday, 4 weeks post op I specifically asked how many calories I should be eating. He said not to count calories or I'd burn myself out on trying to figure all the stuff out. He said just focus on getting in my Protein -90g daily and at least 64oz of Water daily. He said don't worry about calories overall. He also said the apps that do the calculating for you are great. I do use the Bariatric app for keeping track of my intake of everything, and it is very helpful!

Good question. I looked at a calorie counter online that told me how many calories I should be taking in to lose weight. I went through all my paperwork and nutritionist never said how many calories but she sure did school me on WHAT I can and cant eat. Like too much sugar for me does NOT work. I am very sensitive to sugar and losing weight so I try to eat as little sugar as possible so that means what I eat within my calorie range really matters.

At 3 months they said 900, 6 months 1200 and I need to aim to always hit 1200 so I don't destroy my metabolism.





I've heard this argument and I have yet to see any peer reviewed science to back it up.

I'm sure it varies from person to person, but I ate less than 600 for more than 6 months and less than 900 until goal at a year. I'm four years out and maintain at well over 2000 when I run I'm closer to 2800 (I'm currently rehabbing an injury so no running). And that's after years of yo yo dieting.

Surely height has to be taken into account cause I'm pretty sure i wasn't eating 2,000 calories most days before before surgery. Of course I do not run either.

Perhaps, but I'm a 5'6" female and weigh 135 so....

And I eat that on days I don't run and maintain because of my muscle mass. That's the kicker for a lot of us... the more muscle mass you have the more your resting metabolic rate.

That's really awesome!! If I could pull that off I would.

I wonder how much my daughter eats for calories a day cause she is just a tad taller than me at 5' and weighs around 100 pounds plus works out. Just as a curiosity factor. She hasn't had kids tho she's is 25.

We are all so different, I'm 48 and have had two kids.

I'm currently hitting between 1100 and 1300 most days at 9.5 months out. I'm still losing and about 13 pounds from my goal. My nut wanted me above 1200 calories per day by 6 months post op so I try and hit that every day.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
