Fill and then sick, don't know where i stand

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I got a fill two weeks ago, and it was tight, i could feel the swelling for a couple of days, but i could keep fluids down. Then i became very ill and was hospitalised and dehydrated due to gastro and another virus last week.

I am still suffering but the dr thinks we could be on top of it all now.

What i am worried about is all the vomiting and stuff, not keeping fluids down because of the illness. how might this have affected me and my band?

ALso, I am still only on thick fluids and am scared to go beyond that. My throat is sore from all the vomiting. How long should i wait for any swelling to subside before i decide whether my band is too tight, after my illness has passed?:help:

Jode, are you on any medications to help you with the vomitting? I would start there first. You may want to consider getting an unfill until the swelling goes down. You can always go back in 1 week to get refilled. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for that. I did get some maxalon from the dr and that has helped heaps. I am well on the road to recovery and can consume more and more as the days go on now which is nice. I had a severe bout of gastro, and now DS has it so hoping i don't get it back again!

Unfortunately I can't go easily to get a fill or unfill. I live in remote Australia and it is 1600km (1000miles???) to my fill and surgeon. Just trying to get a little advice before I worry about planning a trip back to him.

Erk, how awful.

Dont worry, you wont get it back again, gastro is usually viral and you've had it now so you wont catch that particular one again. And thankfully for we adults, we've been exposed to so much, its pretty few and far between.

As for an unfill, if you're getting down more and more then chances are you'll calm down inside and be OK. If its not substantially better in a week say, then perhaps think about going in.

Thanks again for your replies.:)

I am pleased to say that I successfully had a mini lunch today, some curried chicken, peas and mashed spudswith carrots. :hungry: Its all stayed down and i got on my merry way. Yay!

I am a little nervy about eating the same thing at night because i had been suffering a bit of reflux, but nothing the last two days, so maybe its linked to the swelling and gastro stuff too. Fingers crossed!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
