The cardiologist..some things she doesn't get

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had my cardiologist appt for pre-op requirement yesterday. The cardiologist was very nice but she didn't understand why I (or anyone) would get any kind of bariatric surgery. She is a young woman, very slim and tiny and was trying to talk me out of the surgery. She told me that all I have to do is stop eating sweets and don't eat after 5pm, then each month give up another food. For example, month one, give up rice, month two give up Pasta.

I listened to her but she really didn't have a clue about what we go through. After she was done, I told her that everything she said would be great if one could do it.

She did give me some good tips on exercise but when I told her I go to the gym 5 x a week she told me to increase it to 6 x a week. I decided to dismiss what she was saying because I know that although she is a specialist, she really doesn't understand what overweight people go through.

Did your bariatric surgeon refer you to her vs. your insurance co? If so, I would be sure to let him know so that he doesn't refer anyone else. She obviously doesn't understand our issues.

Hi, wasa, no actually it was my PCP that referred me to her. He set me up with all of my appointments. The gastro dr is so happy that I am getting the surgery as is my PCP. The pulmonary dr thought it was a great thing but the tech that did my venus doppler test said she didn't think I should get the surgery (not that I asked her)...everyone has an opinion!

Congrat's on your 38 lbs lost since 9/20.

For me - my come back to those in disagreement of my decision is that -- I can lose weight - I have done it many times throughout my life - but I can't keep the weight off - once I stop the "diet" it comes back with extra pounds.

You are doing wonderful -- and it is not for everyone -- but I am very happy with my decision and hope you will be as well!

It's not "easy" (as some believe it is the easy way out) but so worth it!!!!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
