Post op pain worse with hernia repair?

Recommended Posts

People seem to experience it, but I don't think it was any worse for me and I had a type II hernia. My dr describes it as a 5 minute, 2 stitch fix.

I had my hiatal hernia fixed during my RNY. I had bad pain the first 2 days post op, but day 3 I felt much better. I had no pain in the area of the hernia repair. My pain was in my left lower side where my big incision was.

I'm 7 days post op with a hernia repair and I have more soreness where the hernia was, but it's certainly not worse than the pain the hernia was causing me before surgery!

Depends what kind of hernia youre talking about. Presumably a hiatal hernia (which is most common) and is no big deal.

Other kinds of hernia repairs could be more painful, a hiatal really isnt unless its a MAJOR one

I had a hiatal repair at the same time as my RNY and for me, yes, i feel it was more painful after and I am just now (2 weeks post) feeling no pain in my hernia site when taking a deep breath. So, based on the other replies above compared to me, for example, the recovery CAN be delayed for some of us, unfortunately. We're all heal differently and have different pain threshold tolerances. If your concerned or if ur pain is really high still and youre a few weeks post, certainly check in with ur doc for piece of mind. Good luck!

Thank you all for response I so appreciate your time. I did speak with my dr today about it and they said the same, it can be a little more uncomfortable. But I am feeling better and better everyday so that's the good news. I just keep plugging on..[emoji847][emoji39][emoji847]

I am three weeks out from my bypass and hernia repair. I was in a lot of pain, really just stopped pain meds like two days ago (night time only). I am only now getting back to “normal “. I am also not losing any weight. I have been at the same weight for a week! So mostly just feeling down

I went in for hernia repair at same time as bypass surgery. They found 5 hernias they had to repair. Still in pain. It's my 18th day post opt. So I'm still recovering. I'm one of those people that are saying what did I do?. Hopefully everything will be fine down the road.

If you had 5 hernias that's very different (and not the norm). And by having them repaired you probably saved yourself from complications down the road such as having them become incarcerated and getting bowel caught in there which is extremely painful (and potentially dangerous)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
