first emotional breakdown...13 dpo...RNY regret?!

Recommended Posts

Had RNY on 09/08/2017. Prior to surgery, I was on a TWO WEEK liquid diet drinking Protein Shakes, broths, g2 etc....

On the 26th of this month, I will be in the clear to begin pureed foods. In all I will have been on a liquid diet for OVER A MONTH!!! That is what's frustrating!

I understand every surgeon is different, but I see so many fellow rny patients who had the surgery around the same time as me already eating or in future stages. I just got frustrated. IM HUNGRY!!! Today was the first day I actually felt hungry. I'm also tired of drinking Protein shakes....I know this is what I signed up for, and I don't regret it, I'm just ready to see some light. Guess it just got to me.

Any tips on how to get through the last 7 days of my liquid diet?

I'm right there with you my RNY was on 8/28/17 my meal schedule showed me being able to eat soft/pured foods in week 4 which should be now but at a closer look at the schedule showed "week 3" is actually 14 days. I have had no problems with anything thus far, I bought some thicker creamed Soups which seems to help. Just hang in there, you have gotten this far one more week won't kill you have an additional, shake more Protein never hurts.

Try to enjoy the process! You have an opportunity to lose all your excess weight. Eventually you can eat everything again. Take this opportunity to heal yourself from obesity. It really is a short period of time in your life. The first year is when you'll lose the most weight so just keep at it and be Positive! The time is gonna pass and you want to enjoy it - think of smaller sizes and more energy.

But lets just clear the air... are you hungry or is it "head hunger" you need to identify those two because when i was in my first month i wanted to eat what i was used to but i knew that if i had it infront of me i couldnt possibly eat it.

Not long to wait now. Puree is better but even on liquids mix it up a bit. I bought some Optifast Desserts and made them thinner different taste you could have yogurt custard lump free Soup I used bought pumpkin soup 1 spoonful of the thick soup watered down with stock like they did in hospital. It's really about being a bit creative :)

I was on liquids for more like 6 weeks all told, so I know your pain! Are you allowed Jello, broth, or suger-free popsicles? It helped me to have a lot of variety. Hot broth feels good going down, popsicles gave me something to chew, jello wasn't my favorite, but at least I could use a spoon for it instead of drinking. LOL

food was a coping mechanism for many of us pre op, and without it our emotions can be overwhelming. Even if you don't have that issue, being on a liquid diet for 4 weeks will make most people hangry. The good news is that you will be able to eat again and be satisfied from very little food..not to mention you will feel incredible as you lose weight and become more healthy.

Many recommend counseling to get those emotions/head hunger under control, not only for your own peace of mind but also to prevent regain from emotional eating later on.

I absolutely understand! I had to do the same - 2 weeks of liquids pre-op, then 2 weeks of liquid post-op. I was so sick of Protein shakes! Have you tried thinning out some yogurt? Soups? I finally got some clear Protein Drinks (lemonade and kiwi & berry from the Bariatric Pal store) and they were a nice break from the sweet Protein Shakes. I'd also mix a little sugar-free Hershey's Syrup with my fair life milk to make high-protein chocolate milk. Hang in there! You'll make it! Make sure you're staying hydrated. That will keep you full longer. On my 3rd week post-op, I was able to have pureed foods and could definitely tell a difference in my energy level (a lot more energy!). Refried Beans and little cheese were my go-to food as well as unflavored Protein Powder mixed with mashed potatoes thinned out with Fairlife milk, with a little cheese. Those were really good and filling. Today (week 5), I begin soft foods. I had some sliced turkey breast and avocado for lunch and my pouch has been ok with it so far.

Stick with it! You'll get there and it will be worth it!!

Your posts are making me sad because my surgeon has us do 2 weeks Protein shake/1 week clear/ 2 weeks Protein Shakes, then so on and so forth. The 1 week clear after surgery is actually my biggest worry. I've been dabbling in green protein smoothies for years because I like them (tho I hear that may change!).

You can do it!! That was the hardest part for me too. Two weeks liquid, then I three weeks after! Now when I look back I think if I could do that, I could do ANYTHING!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
