Any Minnesota (MN) sleevers?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am partway thru meeting my requirements. I took my psych eval and I am waiting for the results. If all goes well, I am thinking I might be a November sleever. Anyway, looking to chat with anyone in a similar place as me. I started this process once before and stopped because I was doing so great losing the weight on my own. As usual, I gained it back so I had to start the process all over since it had been over a year. I am trying to read everything I can, so I am prepared. The more I read the more nervous I am. It seems that everyone just has such different experiences. I'm not even thru the process yet, but it keeps me awake at night thinking about how to keep this secret, or who I should tell. Looking to see if anyone else is on here in my area. Thanks for reading!

Hi Shellabella30,

Sure are other Minnesotans! Welcome! Congratulations on starting up the journey again. Feel free to send me a message to chat if you'd like. I see that you had questions about choosing a surgeon before. Did you find a surgeon to work with?

Katie

Thanks for your reply!! I did meet with Dr Laura July at Alina in Fridley. I liked her, but I can’t find too much on her. I’ve been having some acid reflex for the first time ever. I’ve been doing some reading and I’m scared it’s going to get worse after the surgery. Any experience with that?

Absolutely! I can tell you that I could not find much on my surgeon but he was nice and helpful and approved by my insurance. I have heard wonderful things about Dr. July on this forum. I will put the links below so you can take a look.

About a year before surgery I'd occasionally have acid reflux and take chewy tums and that seemed to combat it. I've had acid three times since surgery and have taken a gas-x strip and that seems to make it go away immediately. I am still on the prescribed acid reducer so that could also be helpful.

Posts about Dr. July:

She has three reviews on this website: https://www.bariatricpal.com/surgeons/1684-laura-july/?tab=feedback

Lastly, here are her patients that are on this website. You might find more information from them as well! https://www.bariatricpal.com/surgeons/1684-laura-july/?tab=patients

Hope this is helpful and things are going well!

Hi! I am in Minnesota as well. Just joined the forum. I am finishing up appointments as well hoping to have it scheduled either in early December or late November.

Congratulations and welcome! I trolled the forum after surgery. I had no idea it existed! It's been helpful to learn from others and to know their struggles. Have you decided where you are going?

Very good. Pretty sure I was more nervous about my psych evaluation than the actual surgery. I still have no idea why I was not nervous...okay I sort of do, but it's ridiculous!

Other than eating less, I would have no idea I had surgery. I've not had any major issues issues after surgery and feel pretty great.

I have had my share of stalls. That would usually be very discouraging to me. However, I am taking it all in stride.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
