Weight training vs Cardio + Sports gear advice, please?

Recommended Posts

I have been working out since I went back to work after my surgery (3.21.17) and the good news is that I am getting much stronger and many of my ailments have significantly reduced. However, exercising has been posing some problems lately. I have huge hanging flaps of skin/fat flopping all over (arms, legs, abdomen, etc) and it's downright embarrassing when I'm trying to do push-ups in class and my stomach hits the ground before I even get halfway through. Ugh! I just keep focusing on crunches and hope for the best. I can't really run, or even do jumping jacks comfortably, everything jiggles and bounces with a lag (and I do have a very good sport bra). It's painful. So I stick with the hand weights and do modified (cheater) jumping jacks and burpees.

I know I will need skin removal, but that's a long way off. Does anyone have any advice on gear or clothing or exercises that will help reduce the flappy-flopping all over? Is there something that has worked well for you?

Several of the weight resistance machines at the gym have helped. Just ask the "wandering" gym supervisor what he/she would recommend for you. Be frank. They are, generally, very helpful. (They want you to stay a reliable returning gym user.)

Compression workout gear from Under Armor is very expensive, but keeps the extra skin from flapping all over the place.

The caveat is you'll need to wear long-sleeved compression shirts if your arms are problematic, and compression pants if your legs are the problem.

Also, a Spanx shaper might keep the belly skin from plopping to the floor while doing push-ups.

I have lost 101 pounds. I have massive bat wings, but am not ready for surgery. I use ace bandages on my upper arms to hold them in. I wear either Fila or Nike workout bottoms which have some compression in them because the thighs are a jiggling. I understand Spanx makes some mid-section stuff for working out but I haven't tried it - the tummy is the least of my problems.

I took up fencing. I work out in the gym regularly - using both a trainer and taking classes. So my attitude has been, I'm trying to make myself healthier and I don't give a hoot about what you think about how I look.

Make an appointment with a trainer to help develop your routine with weights and figure out exercises which help with cardio but help you avoid the jiggle.

Best of luck!

The wandering reference was that, at the gym I used to go to, there were three classes of employee/attedant.

1. the person who runs a class or is an active personal trainer

2. a desk-bound "clerk" who is a receptionist or enrolment person

3. everyone else. The wanderers who close doors, mop messes, put weights away, wipe benches, etc.

LOL Totally not what I would think of...really, and technically, someone who is works there and wandering around in the gym. HA! I see it all the time.

Compression garments are my friends. I've found some decent ones at thrift stores and they reduce the bouncing significantly.

I'll look into getting some compression gear. Thank you all so much for all of your wonderful advice! - Time to go shopping... again :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
