Surgery yesterday -- what have I done?

Recommended Posts

I'm scared. I'm pretty sure I was beat with a baseball bat for hours. This pain is the worst I've ever felt. I am scared to ask but when will it subside? I got 20 Vicodin and that's all they gave. I got nothing yesterday in recovery even. I'm really scared that I made a huge mistake. I'm really scared this pain will last for weeks. I'm just scared of a lot right now. I've been hateful to my mom who is here helping I'm not myself and I know it's normal but I'm scared of this pain!!

I'm sorry that you are feeling so horrible. It was a few days out for me before I could move around and not be in pain. I didn't feel too bad though.

Big hugs and hope you feel better and more like yourself.

If it doesn't feel normal to you say something; speak up; call your surgeon's office. I hope you can look back on this day with a smile on your face soon. Feel better!

It will get better. I'd definitely make a call to your surgeon's office, because it sounds like you are in more pain than you should be.

Did they tell you that you could also take liquid Tylenol?

the soreness will go away in a few days. Hang in there!

No I haven't called them. I feel like I'd be be one of those Whiney patients. But maybe I should. Yes I'm alternating Tylenol with Vicodin. I'm just shocked they rushed me out of that surgery center in a matter of hours. Didn't matter that I was crying and falling asleep when they made me walk laps. Didn't matter that I couldn't go to the restroom so they Used a catheter they want me out of there. It seems an overnight stay should be mandatory. My back hurts from laying on it. Everything hurts much more than I anticipated. I'm honestly afraid I'll never feel the same again. Did they tell any of you guys to drink a warm beverage each am to prepare the sleeve for solids? Why do I have to wait a week before having creamy Protein Shakes? I want to die. Since I can't die I just cry

I had my surgery on Wednesday and left hospital on Thursday night around 7. Dr. said I could stay another night if I wanted but I didn't. Now that I am home, I am also in a lot of pain. No pain meds except for Tylenol and Ibuprofen. It hurts reaily bad to swollow liquids but I have also had two Protein Shakes today. I keep thinking about eating and feeling like I've made a big mistake. It feels so permanent.

I felt awful when I woke up from surgery but they gave me pain meds after about ten minutes and I never really had pain after that. I know I have been very lucky, and I'm sorry you have gone through so much. I agree that an overnight stay seems reasonable.

The clear liquid diet for the first few days or a week is part of the very slow easing of liquids so your stomach can heal. I had two weeks of full liquids and now, 2.5 weeks post-op, I'm finally at pureed. So many more choices! but I'm still not hungry. Make sure you do your best with the Water and take any meds you were given and Gas-X if you need it.

Best of luck--and yes, check with your surgeon's office. I really hope you are feeling better physically and emotionally soon.

Mine was outpatient.
I actually handled it really well.
Have you had abdominal surgery before?
Maybe you had a lot of scar tissue?

I stayed overnight so used some IV pain killers the first night. THen some tylenol for a couple days and then went cold turkey. The first 4 days are going to be painful. Just try to rest and remain calm when you arent doing your walks. Lots of sleep will help you. I truly believe i was able to recover faster by using the minimal drugs. I only used the stuff they give you to coat your stomach and the acid suppressor. After about 5 days i had a major improvement. I pretty much drank just Water and a little Protein Drink during that time.

I was originally going to use David Kim and do outpatient, but got scared after his legal issues and moved to UT Southwest. But i still went home the next afternoon. I didnt want to stay any longer than i had to. Good luck. Drink water.

My doctor said for sleeve patients it's 2 nights in the hospital and for bypass it's 3 nights. It really makes me wonder how each practice can be so different.

Recovery is uncomfortable but you should not have excruciating pain. The pain should be tolerable when managed with the appropriate medications.

Is the pain managed with the Vicodin? Do you get any relief? It may be that you body doesn't respond well to that med. You may respond better to Oxy or Dilaudid. You surgeon may be able to prescribe something else.

Ask for a different pain reliever I can't believe they rush you out the hospital I had a lot of scar tissue since I had a lap band erosion and infection before so I had a lot of pain but even tho I was ok with oxy hope you feel better soon !!!!!keep us posted !!!!!

I had surgery on a Tuesday and was told I'd leave on Thursday. My surgery went very well and I walked that afternoon. But that night I woke up in agony and turned out I had internal bleeding. I had another surgery on Wed to remove the blood. When I didn't improve on Thursday, I got a blood transfusion on Friday and was finally released Saturday. Call your doctor just to be sure you're ok! Also, the gas from the surgery is extremely uncomfortable. I regretted the surgery too. I couldn't even sip Water for 4 days. I am two and a half weeks out now and I'm feeling better but taking the drinking and eating very slow. I can drink water and shakes now but puréed foods are a challenge, I can only handle one ounce. It is much better than it was though! I'm down 30lbs.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
