So I am 10 days out (which I know isn't far out) and I am in more pain now, then when I was in the hospital. I saw my Dr today and he said it's normal. I can only walk a little at a time and standing after a min or 2 it feels like someone is stabbing with a sharp heated knife. I have to find my breathe and I get lightheaded. I have a very high pain tolerance so to me maybe something is wrong.

I think the fact he acted like I was seeking pain meds pissed me off the most. I told him I am almost out of pain meds he gave me, just to show that I have had to take them due to the pain. I didn't want more even told him so. My dad was with me and he was very upset with the way I was being treated. He even stood up and told him the amount of pain I was in bc he clearly wasn't listening to me. My dad asked what else I could take bc I don't want the pain killers. Then the Dr said that he isn't going to write me a new script and just take Tylenol. He must have said I am not writing you a new script 3 times.

I was in tears when I got out to the car. All I wanted was to make sure everything is ok. I was fine with Tylenol. He was just so rude and didn't want to listen to what I was saying. All he did was push on 2 spots on my stomach. I am worried about it and have the right to ask about it and tell him what I have or haven't been able to do. I hope things go better at my next 1 month follow up.

Has anyone else been in a lot of pain (not due to gas pain) but actual muscle pain? If so what did you do to help with the pain? I am willing to try anything. I am not regretting it yet but if this pain keeps up I don't know what my thoughts would be.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. That DR was not listening.
I described my pain as a world class ab workout. Every time I stood up or sat down I was sore. It wasn't enough pain to keep me from wanting to move but I knew it was going to be uncomfortable.
I could only stand for a few minutes before I got exhausted. My abs and back would get sore and tired.
The fatigue didn't change much until about 5 or 6 weeks after surgery.
I started commuting to work and waiting for mass transit etc during weeks 3 and 4 still got my abs and back sore.
I didn't have any shooting or stabbing pain though.
Good luck!

I am so sorry this is your experience. Keep taking someone with you to your appts. Write out your concerns and questions before you go in, if he isn't listening, hand him the paper.

Also ask if you can see a PA next time instead.

I am 7 days out and still hurt pretty bad, I just had my appt and was told to keep taking my pain meds and expect relief in the next 1-2 weeks. I also use large gel ice packs to my abdomen every 20 mins. I brace the site when I move and prop a small pillow under it if I sleep on my side. You might call and ask if you could get/wear an abdominal binder.< br>
If the pain is too unbearable, go to ER.

I'm so sorry you had this experience with your doctor!!! It's so important to be able to trust him! I had pain for two weeks and took the hydrocodone I was prescribed for the entire two weeks. I hate taking narcotic pain killers, but the pain was that bad. After that, the pain subsided, but I felt miserable. By about 6 weeks, I was in tip top shape, as far as feelings are concerned. He may be right about your pain not being unusual. But, if it continues to be unbearable, go see him again. Or if possible, could you ask for a different one? I don't know how the insurance would take care of that. Or maybe see your Primary Care and tell them all about the concerns you have. Just don't suffer unnecessarily!!!! :(

Thanks everyone. I will have to try ice. I have been using a heating pad. I expected a lil bit of pain but nothing like this.
I took Tylenol and it didn't even touch the pain. I am just going to have to deal with it. If it gets worse he will be hearing from me.

When I go to my next appointment I will definitely be bringing one of my parents.
Let's just say his mood hopefully will be better.

Are you sure it's not partly gas? The reason I ask is because the gas pain I had was by far the worst thing I ever experienced. I was writing in pain pretty much and could barely walk. Laying on my left side was life changing.

I hope you feel better soon.

Stick to your guns and advocate for yourself. I also use liquid Tylenol, just don't use more than 4000mg in 24hrs. And I found ice was better than heat, heat made me ache more. Good luck and let us know how it went.

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
