@fastfoodaddictnomoreIf you're going to Mexico there is only one practice I know that DSers recommend. That's Dr. Esquerra. He's at the Mexacali Bariatric Center and was trained by Dr. Ungerson. I know many DSers who have had their surgery at that facility.

I've been researching there as well. In fact that's the only Dr that has come up for DS. I was hoping for other options. I see lots of great things about DR Illian and VSG and his website offers DS but I've yet to come across one of his DS patients.

You may want to join BariatricPal MX Weight Loss Surgery Group on Facebook. I believe you will run into DS patients there and you can get all of your information there.

Dr. Illian did my gastric sleeve and was amazing. However, he would not do a DS when my sleeve failed. He wanted to do a mini-bypass. I don't think he does them, or has much experience. Look into Dr. Alejandro Lopez. That is who I'm going to go with. I have spoken with a few people who had the SADI/SIPS with him. Let me know if you want the contact info. Good luck!

I read somewhere else that Dr Illian talked someone out of the DS to do the sleeve so I had in my mind that he doesn't do them till it was offered on the website. I did request more info from Bill but have yet to hear back from him. My gut tells me to look elsewhere for the DS. I was planning on the sleeve and if it failed to convert to DS. With the way my body holds onto weight I will need to go full force into this journey. I need the long term results the DS offers and would prefer to only have the one surgery. If my insurance paid I would be more willing to take that chance.

When will you be having your surgery? I would love that information. Thank you.

Not until mid-June of next year, unfortunately. I had to cancel this summer due to knee surgery. Keep me updated!

To be fair, Dr. Illian didn't want to do my DS because I was not very overweight. He said it would be too drastic for me. Which the traditional DS probably would be, but I think the SADI/SIPS would be less drastic. Even so, I don't think he was really doing them Then, but I'm sure he could. He is a very talented surgeon. And also works weekly as a trauma Surgeon, which I oils imagine keeps his skills very sharp!

He's an amazing doctor. I had a hard time gettingrespinses from his coordinator Bill, though. Dr. Illian actually called me personally when I could get through to him.

When's your surgery? Please keep us aupdated! I'm most concerned with lose BMs and odor!

Yes bill did not respond. I was approved by a 2nd Dr for the DS and have been reviewing the Facebook page and have been super impressed with the dr following up with patients that post questions or concerns about their journey. Also lots of satisfied ds patients.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
