foods and supplements covered by insurance

I am pre op but wondering about insurance coverage on protein powders, supplements, etc. I tried calling my insurance and rx. Insurance said i did not have coverage for items like that under medical. RX needed specific brands/items to "run a test claim" to see if it is covered. Has anyone had any luck?

I've only had luck getting vitamins "covered" by my HSA. I had to get my doctor to write an Rx for them, but I can get reimbursed for them now. No dice for insurance coverage!
