I'm new to this.... post-op 4 weeks and very scared

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone -

I am from NYC but work and live in Abu Dhabi for the last 5 years. I recently had the gastric sleeve surgery in Egypt with a very reputable surgeon who was recommended to me by many. Everything went great thank God and I returned back to Abu Dhabi after the first week. I am currently here alone and my entire family is back in NY so it's been tough. I'm moving back next month but in the meantime I'm doing this all on my own. I don't have a dietitian here and no support groups and no one really knows I did this because I didn't want to share with people at work or acquaintances. I started at 180lbs and lost 15lbs so far, starting week 4 today. My doctor had me on Clear Liquids the first three weeks but allowed me to add yogurt, Jello, and Protein Shakes for week 3 as well a Multivitamin. Now that i'm starting week 4 he said I can eat anything but i'm so scared. Most of all scared because I feel like I can't taste anything anymore.... the weight is off but i'm scared this is too good to be true like everything else i've tried. I feel great and i'm not craving anything but am I supposed to be like this forever? I'm worried that I won't know what full feels... I guess I just get anxiety because there's no one to talk to and i'm not sure if what i'm feeling is normal. My family suggested finding a support group online until I go home so I'm hoping this will help. My mom also did the surgery back home in April and she's been doing great so she's always helping me when she can. Will these feelings pass? Will I be able to go out to dinner or just cook at home and eat more than two spoonfuls of food?

Thank you for hearing my story.

Thank you so much [emoji4] I do feel better knowing that things will change. How long did it take you till you were able to have 1/2 cup of food?

Tina, I am so sorry you have to start this very difficult journey so far away from your support. It must be difficult but I hear so much strength in your post. You can do this.

I am nearly 6 months post op and almost all my concerns have faded away. I feel so amazing the little idiosyncrasies I deal with now are minimal.

I do not feel real hunger. This is something I am grateful for. Early on I had lots of head hunger but to this day I don't have any symptoms of hunger. This has enabled me to stick to my eating plan so well.

This group is the only support that I receive. It is an amazing resource and I feel like it is sufficient for my needs. I do not have a support group in my area and I live in a small town. I can't even go to a local therapist because everyone in the neighborhood will know I need a shrink:-)

By about three months out I started to feel "normal". I could comfortably eat 4-6 ounces of food and enjoy a dinner out with friends without feeling like a weirdo for only eating a few bites.

In short, you will be fine. Without a nutritionist it is hard. A simple formula I have learned for success is 60-100 g of Protein a day, no more than 25 carbs, and 64 ounces of liquid each day. Early on I couldn't reach 60 so for now make it a goal that you are trying to reach. The 64 ounces can include the liquid you get from shakes, coffee, tea, etc. At 4 weeks this can be done but for me I needed at least one Protein Shake a day that had 30g of protein.

Take your vitamins...so important.

I know you will do great!

Take care

Hi Pam,
Thank you so so much for your kind words and encouragement. That's very sweet of you and you made me feel like I'm not alone in this.

I'm so happy things are going well with you and that you've recovered beautifully. It's so funny because you said something I've been thinking which is that I'm hoping to go out to dinner with friends or family and not be a weirdo when the food comes lol I can't wait till that time comes and I can feel somewhat normal.

I just can't wait to be home next months and I'm sure it'll make things better. I do take Protein Shakes now 30g of protein each but since starting week 4 today I'll limit it to only one shake and see how that goes.

I think maybe what I'm feeling is that head hunger also like you said and since I'm here alone I guess I've turned to good whenever I was bored or had any other emotions going on. Now it's just hard to figure out what to do but thank God I have a dog so he does keep me company

I'm 4 months out, and can eat 4 ounces of most things, 3oz of solid Protein, or 8 ounces of Soup at a sitting. From what I read on the board, it seems this is pretty typical (I might eat a smidge more than most, but close enough...). When I go to a restaurant, I can finish a cup of soup.. not broth necessarily.. I mean chili, or bean soup, or whatever. This was possible at about 2-3 months postop.

At this point, things feel "normal" to me now. My new normal. There for a while, I was kinda horrified by the portions I saw others eating, but I've gotten used to that now too. I know I won't be eating that much, but it doesn't faze me. Kinda like if I saw someone eating Pork rinds (and I don't like pork rinds). Good for them, but it has nothing to do with me.

As for the weight staying off? That is completely under your control. The hunger will probably come back within a year, so you will need to use this time to learn new, healthy eating habits, and they'll have to be lifelong. Just like any diet you've ever been on, if you stop paying attention, and just eat what everyone else is eating, the weight will come back.

Full feels different for each person. I feel it low in my abdomen, while most feel it more in the chest area. I can eat happily, and then suddenly I'll feel like one more bite is A REALLY BAD IDEA. If it happens while I'm chewing, I go ahead and spit out that mouthful. I haven't really ever been uncomfortable or vomited from overeating since I get such a distinct feeling (touch wood).

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
