I know everyones doc and nutritious is diff but at a week past 3 month's how many grams of Protein are you expected to get. Mine is 73-100 that seems like a lot to me

It is a lot, but there's a reason why we keep getting told to drink enough Water, get enough protein--these are the basics of the program. I haven't had surgery yet (and I'm having the sleeve, not the band), but I think I'm expected to get 60 to 80 grams, so not that much different. I've noticed that most of the successful people posting here say they follow the doctor's diet specifications as closely as they can . . .

At 3 months post-op, I was getting 100-120 grams of Protein per day (at around 1000 calories per day).

I was expected to eat in excess of 80+ grams of Protein starting at six weeks post-op. I am more than 2 years out and consume 100+ grams of protein on most days.

Protein is the most filling of the three macronutrients (fat and carbs being the other two macros). High protein consumption makes you feel fuller longer, reducing chances you'll overeat junk foods.

Also, protein demands the most energy to digest. This is referred to as the thermic effect of food (TEF). Eating 80 grams of protein instead of 80 grams of carbs burns an extra 75 calories a day on average (525 calories a week). This gradually makes a notable difference in your overall calorie expenditure and can prevent regain.

Also, protein is vital for preserving muscle tissue, and as you likely know, the more muscle we have, the more calories we burn. Your body eats away at its skeletal muscle if you don't consume enough protein.

I get at least 100 grams of Protein a day, and at least 134 oz of fluids a day. Protein and fluids are the most important things to get. And the more active you are, the more protein and fluids you need. As far as calories, it's more about what you're eating, not the number of calories. If you are eating a lot of protein, veggies, good things, you are fueling your body. It doesn't matter how many calories you're eating. I'm almost seven months post op and I still eat between 700 and 800 calories a day. And I'm very active. And still losing weight every week. I tried to eat more calories but it didn't help me at all. I will continue to eat the same amount of calories as long as I'm fueling my body.

I just hit my 6 weeks and im trying to get 80 to 100 grams per day. Before surgery while losing weight I was at 90 to 120. I'm trying to limit myself to one shake per day. I find that I can't always finish my portion of meat. 3 ounces is about my limit.
GBLady41 I am impressed with your 134 oz of fluids. I find it to be a struggle since going back to work to get in my 64 ounces. But I'm working on it.

I'm getting 70 - 95gm daily. I try for the 95g on workout days. I get all of it from food except for the Premier Protein Clear Water I drink on workout days.

In the first 3- 6 months before you can eat enough real food, you have to force those Protein Shakes down. I hated them with a passion but I knew it was supremely important to weight loss and maintaining muscle mass so I drank them anyway, gagging all the way. You can also try the Premier Protein Clear Protein waters - 90 calories and 20g protein. I generally don't tolerate drinks with artificial sweeteners but I actually like them. Also Fairlife milk has 13g of protein per cup. Make your protein shakes with Fairlife and you get an extra protein boost.

Are you drinking a Protein Shake? Eating chicken or turkey or fish or eggs? Does your doctor know this? I'm worried about this for you . . .

It's easy...focus on meat and dairy for your Protein.

Tilapia fillets = 20 grams of protein

chicken breast = 30 grams of protein

Salmon patties = 22 grams of protein

1 cup of cottage cheese = 24 grams of protein

1 cup of ground turkey = 32 grams of protein

1 cup of Greek yogurt = 15 grams of protein

Protein First, leave out all the rest until you are getting that protein in per day (cept for fluids of course). I think that's a key reminder, being that we are used to eating multiple things during our meals. This is a whole new ballgame. Things just don't work the same for us any longer, so we have to adapt. Sure, I'd like to grab for that nice banana, or apple sauce, but I have to stop myself and think... have I gotten in at least 60 g protein yet? If not, I grab the yogurt, or anything else with some notable protein.

I have a small dry erase board on my Fridge, everything I take out of it, I write down. It has an area for my protein, fl ounces, fat, carbs, and calories. This isn't forever, but until my "muscle memory" changes from blindly grabbing and eating, to focusing on my new way to eat, this is my go-to. I take a photo of my board every night before bed and that's my log. Clean slate every morning, and I try to add a few new things each week.

Thank you guys so much for your feedback. I will definitely force myself to drink the Protein Shakes because my body is so weak and I am tired all the time.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
