I am just 20 yo and going through the process. I have been researching for a couple years and really want to. I want to know would you guys go through with it then? A couple people have been discouraging me even though I have been a mix of obese & overweight my whole life.

Rachel the decision is really yours and it shouldn't matter what others think, especially if you do not know them. The surgeries were not available to me in my 20's. I did research them as they became available but I believed I could lose weight on my own. Last year I knew I was fooling myself about losing the weight on my own, I needed help. At that point I changed from a passive weight loss person to aggressively seeking help. After my initial seminar I came home and started to putt together my support team. My only request was if you choose to support me through this journey great, if you cannot be supportive then please just pray for me. Do not try and talk me out of this,, it is my journey and I have made up my mind to do this. Most of the people I talked to were supportive and the others did not try to talk me out of my choice. The one thing I know is without this support system helping me I would not have made it to the scheduled surgery. So decide what you want to do and putt together your support team. Good luck!

I am 26 in four months and I did it! There are plenty , hundreds of people who did it in teens & 20s. I read about a 2 year old having it done overseas (not that I agree with it). You have to do what's best for you. It's a great tool.

My weight yo-yo'ed massively in my 20s. I didn't realize what I was up against. I would lose 60 pounds through diet and exercise, regain 100 pounds, then lose 50 pounds, then regain 90. Rinse and repeat.

Although getting weight loss surgery in my 20s would have saved me considerable misery, I predict I would have regained some weight after the procedure because of my lack of understanding on obesity.

You see...obesity is not curable. Ever, ever, ever. It can definitely be put into remission by losing enough weight to enter the normal BMI range, but those of us who are/were obese will need to be vigilant for life.

Even after surgery, our bodies still fight to get back to the heavier weights we once were. Those who slide backward into old habits often regain substantial weight. I know of a sleever who regained 150+ pounds.

Would I encourage a 20-year-old to undergo bariatric surgery? If a myriad of health issues are present, you may wish to consider it. However, educate yourself about the limitations of surgery. It is not a quick fix to a weight problem. Good luck to you.

I had my surgery at 65 and wish the surgery was available in my 20's!!!

Everyone has to make this decision for them self no matter what age. in my 20's I was still having kids but I told my self after the last one I wasn't keeping the weight and I was thin until I had 2 girl last one in 2006 and 2012 I was 242 and did it. I now look like the old me after all my work done lol.I wish u all good luck on this journey...

Yes! I had a lap band installed when I was 29. I'm pushing 50 now and so wish I'd been able to have this surgery to start with. It's been life-changing. Good luck whatever you decide! Only you know what's best for you.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
