If any of you could have had the sleeve done in your 20's would you?

Recommended Posts

I am just 20 yo and going through the process. I have been researching for a couple years and really want to. I want to know would you guys go through with it then? A couple people have been discouraging me even though I have been a mix of obese & overweight my whole life.

I did it in my 20s. The problem is that it effects your social life a ton! You can't go out and drink and eat with all your friends anymore. But it's all worth it in the end. I actually wish I did it even younger. The older you are, the more you miss out on in life.

I'm 28 and I think I definetly wouldn't have been ready if I had done it in my early 20's despite being pretty overweight. I just wasn't mature enough or emotionally ready(or had that ah-HA! Moment) everyone moves at their own pace with these things and do their research before making a desicion.

When I was 20, after my first year of collage I weighed 230lbs (gained about 40lb). That summer I worked out 3-4 hours a day and only ate one massive meal a day. I was able to get down to 186 lbs... and then .. I gained it all back and for the next 27 years I packed on another 200+. I think when your younger people think you can work at it and you have time to make things right. That's the way adults think. When I was 20 I just wanted to know how I was getting beer and if I would ever find a girlfriend lol. My weight was not important to me and eating and drinking was fun. I only wished that instead of doing that ridiculous diet, that one of my parents sat me down and discussed options like having surgery. I think the surgery makes your health become the issue because your weight is just a symptom, which as a kid might be hard to understand. When your younger you mind isn't thinking about health.. its about having fun and looking good.

Women are defiantly more mature then men (lol) so as others have posted, make the decision that's best for you. Don't think of this as a diet because it's really just a process to fix a symptom, which you will still need to address. Your body didn't make you over weight, you did.

If I knew then what I know now, yes I would have done it in my 20's. But when I was in my 20's, I was raising two little boys and husband ;) and thought I would eventually be able to lose it on my own. I also thought that if I couldn't lose it on my own, how would I ever be able to modify my eating habits that having surgery would require.

I had surgery at the beginning of March and have lost 40 lbs. It has been the best thing for me. Good luck making the decision that is best for you. :)

I totally would have done it in my 20s but back then I never thought I was actually big enough for weight loss surgery. I was one of those people who was happy with the way I was even though I knew my weight was getting dangerously high. I was 33 when I finally had my surgery and I don't regret a thing, down 88 pounds total since last June, 58 since surgery.

I was at at the end of my 29th year when i got sleeved. I had actually gotten a referral in 2012 but tried to do it myself and failed miserably time and time again like every other time. So glad i did it when i did. I don't have kids yet and had diabetes, elevated bp and elevated cholesterol. None of those are issues now and i am now 30 and almost 8 months post op. Get it as early as you can. I was more ready when i got it so im not too upset. Just wish i had gotten it before i had all the obesity complications.

OMG yes! I was 25 when I had my sleeve surgery and I only wish I had thought to do it sooner! I'm so happy with how everything has turned out.

Are you able to go out and do a bunch of shots? Eh, I can't (I know a couple who can) but you can still drink a little. Are you able to go out an gorge on wings? No, but you can have some wings. It didn't impact my social life much at all as far as what I've been limited to.

My weight for much of my adult life has been all over the place. I was 180 or less until I graduated HS. Then I went up to 240, then lost 60 pounds in 3-4 months back to 180.. then some years later depression hit and I shot up to 361 in a span of 5 years.

If I knew everything then that I do now, I would undoubtedly have had the surgery. Having been through what I have, it's given me more appreciation for the benefits of it.

I am 26 in four months and I did it! There are plenty , hundreds of people who did it in teens & 20s. I read about a 2 year old having it done overseas (not that I agree with it). You have to do what's best for you. It's a great tool.

Me too! I am 25 and I just did it! another co worker I had is doing the bypass soon and he is about 27 or 28. so yes everyone in my group said they "wished they did it earlier".

so deff don't hesitate because of age. I also agree with another person who said do what's right for you! This is a big commitment. Well worth it in my opinion and I am only 2 weeks in but I am seeing results now and my relationship with food is changing alread which is great after struggling with food addiction for years

I wish I knew someone who is going through this that's my area. I need to go to support group. My mom is 10 years out RNY and doing great, that encouraged me to take a leap of faith.

Hello, I am 28 and had my surgery 5/17/2017. I am glad I decided to do this at 305lbs. I do not have a lot of health issues currently but felt that I did this mostly as a preventative. The only thing that is hard is that I did not save up enough to cover the expenses from surgery and the time I am taking off of my full time job. I also decided to take the summer off from going to university to heal which has put me behind for graduation. However, I know of all of these sacrifices are going to be worth it. I will sleep better, I will be healthier and I will feel proud to be my sons mother and my husband's wife. I am doing this a little for cosmetic and mostly for my health in the future so I don't have to struggle with all of the problems I see weight alone can cause let alone the genetics that run in my family it could have been a nightmare to wait just 10 more years.

If you have a support group in your area defintately go! check it out. meet people. hear their stories. I did notice that I was still the only one in their 20's really. There was one other girl I think but I don't know where she is in her process we did not connect. but there was a lot of other people all older... some 30's but more even past that.

I think this website does more to connect you to your age group. looking for others- connecting- and maybe contacting them further

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
