Gain weight during pre op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

You gained 10lbs in 3 days? Did you mean to type 245 instead of 255? It's probably just a difference in scales.

I'm struggling on my pre-op diet too but as everyone says, just keep at it.

Exactly, the weight at home on your scale is likely to be different from the weight on the doctor's scale.

Basically, at home, I weigh myself naked first thing in the morning after using the washroom. This is so that I have a baseline: the weight of clothes and other such stuff doesn't interfere. This isn't some cheap scale that I found at Goodwill either, it's a Withings scale which syncs my weight to the cloud (which is actually kinda cool, because it allows me to graph it and see patterns and progress).

At the doctor's office, I would be genuinely surprised if I DIDN'T weigh differently. Different scale, I'm clothed and I've had at a bare minimum at least 1 litre of Water. Of course, I wake up at 5:00 am every morning, so there is a difference in time as well.

I'm so sorry ... Fat fingers. Not 245, 254. Gained a pound

Um, if you meant 254, then per your original post, you gained roughly 10 pounds.

If you meant 245, then you gained a pound.

So, it's 245?

I weighed in Thursday at 254.4, today at home weighed 255.2.. Sorry this lack of food has me all messed up lol

Ah, gotcha. Sorry. ^_^;;

Anyway, are you sure there aren't low-sodium broths? Yeah, salt definitely aids in Water retention.

I looked for low sodium and there's even a sodium free but it has 10 calories and sugar and carbs . I think I will buy some low sodium tomorrow. I've been increasing my Water thinking that would flush it out but just making me feel like a bloated whale.

Maybe you should discuss it with your surgeon's office? They might have some ideas about what works and what doesn't. As for the sugar and carbs, everything has sugar and carbs in it. If you were losing weight during your medical weight loss classes you might be okay. I think the issue of why they have you on a liquid diet prior to surgery is because they don't want anything physical in the stomach when it comes time to slice and dice.

It's to reduce the liver. I was not required to lose any weight prior to surgery, but he does have to move the liver so they don't want it inflamed as many obese people have. I emailed my dietician though. Hope to hear tomorrow

I thought that sounded a little familiar, so I pulled out my paperwork I got from the patient education seminar and saw a slide that read this:

  • We expect weight loss prior to surgery
  • Even a few pounds (5-10) can make a difference - Liver
  • Do not gain weight
  • May cx (cancel) surgery if there is weight gain

... So yeah, I need to be extra mindful about that.

If you regularly menstruate, you may also be at a point in your cycle where you gain a little extra. On average, I gain 2 - 5 lbs in the 10 to 5 days before my period starts. It returns to normal the day my period comes. That could be a factor too!

Try a Water pill....just one....and drink tons of water....it will get rid of the sodium water

The pre op diet is to shrink the liver so there is room to get to the stomach.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
