What to tell boss about surgery in June?

Recommended Posts

I will likely be having my surgery in June (July at the latest). I still haven't told my main boss yet for fear of retaliation. You see, with me having been taking so much time off for all of my appts and the fact that our bookkeeper is retiring July 1 and I'm on the hiring committee for her replacement, I'm afraid he'll get mad. I don't know how to approach the subject with him. He's not the friendliest of people with me. Not that he's mean, just that I'm not one of his "pals" so to speak. How would you approach this? What would you say?

You dont have to go into specifics about what kind of surgery you are having because most people really dont and wont understand it. But I would def let him know that you do have surgery coming up because June/July will be here sooner than later. And if need be you can explain to him that, that is the reason for why you have been taking off so much,

I didnt want to tell my boss either and I didnt go into specifics but I did finally let him know bc I was taking off so much for appointments and he became suspicious like I was looking for another job or somethin lol which I didnt want him to think.

Just tell him, it may not be as bad as u think and a weight will be lifted.

You do not have to tell him anything. In fact all he needs to know is that you are going out on medical leave. FMLA does protect you from being fired for leaving. The company doesn't have to pay you but they cannot fire you.

Depending on the company, if you carry short term disability you have to tell them when you apply for it but they CANNOT tell him specifics. FMLA and HIPA cover this.

I didn't tell my boss and we are pretty close.

I told my boss I was having surgery and would be off work 4-6 weeks (worst case, I was only off for 3 weeks and could have gone back earlier if needed). He didn't ask details about the surgery and I didn't offer any. For my STD paperwork my surgeon and I said "major abdominal surgery" but my boss doesn't see any of that - he just gets notified that I applied for a medical leave.

I told my boss I have to have my gallbladder removed. That's that what can she say you can't have off.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
