Try setting a timer on your phone. Also, try changing temperatures. Some days I found room temp Water was better than cold, other days it was the other way around. The lightheadedness could be from dehydration. please be careful.

I had the same problem at that point in recovery but it gets better. Having a small water bottle with me at all times helped. And my doc told me when I feel light headed to eat a little salt.

Meeting your Protein and Water goals is a full time job in the first few weeks post-op. You have to do whatever you have to do to meet them. That is why I took 6 weeks off of work after surgery. Physically, I needed to recover, but I also had to get my head in the game post-op and understand how it was different from life pre-op if I wanted to be successful long-term.

I suggest that you keep sipping. Set a timer to remind you to meet certain milestones every 15 minutes. (If you drink 4 oz every 15 minutes, that's 16 oz in an hour and 64 oz in 4 hours. You are up a lot more than 4 hours, so you could even start at 1 oz or 2 oz every 15 minutes and let it take you 8 or 12 hours total.)

Even at 7.5 months out, I eat 8 meals about 2 hours apart and do the water drinking in between (allowing for the 30 minutes before and after eating). It takes me 12-14 hours to do this each day (even while I am working). It's a commitment, yes, but it is what it takes to be successful.

Good luck!

I'm 4 weeks today post op and I still struggle and can't get the full 64 oz. The most I have gotten was 38 in one day along with what I ate plus 2 Protein Shakes. It's gotten better as I get further away from my surgery date.

I had a bit of the same issue. I find that if I make some Crystal Light and mix it per directions then place in a large drinking bottle and sip at it; it works. I just keep the bottle near me and just take a sip every so often. Before long, the bottle is empty and I need to refill it. I never drank Crystal Light pre-op, but found that with the flavor choices, I have been able to find some pretty good flavors. The bottle is easy to take anywhere. Mine holds 30oz. I know just drinking plain Water makes it difficult to drink the required amount.

Water is a huge struggle. Eventually you will be able to drink it in large amounts again. Right now your stomach can't handle it.

Sips is all you can do throughout the day. It will get better.

Any day now you will surprise yourself, and realize you just took four sips in a row, and then realize an 8oz Protein Shake just disappeared in minutes.

When you feel light headed, eat a little salt. That should help better than laying down as it helps with dehydration.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
