4 oz per hour?

Recommended Posts

I had my gastric sleeve surgery on 4/13, and it's been going great. Healing fast, no pain, no problem with gas or keeping down liquids. Going to the doc tomorrow for my two week appointment and will ask this then, but ...

I don't feel like my stomach is small enough, if that makes sense. It's supposed to be around 4 oz, right? And liquids are supposed to be difficult to get down, and only a few sips, like 4 oz., is supposed to fill you up.

Well, I am not having ANY problems with liquids, or getting down more than 4 oz. at a time. Have I messed something up here? Do you think I could have stretched my stomach already by drinking too much?

I'm hoping I'm just a quick healer with a strong constitution...

Well, at least I don't feel alone!

I will post on what my doc says about it tomorrow.

Liquids go right through you. They also tend to be laden with carbs. You should not expect early on to be retaining food as if you were having dense Protein foods.

It's very possible to beat the sleeve in the very way you described.. it's up to you to moderate yourself.

So my doc says this is no problem in moderation. Everyone is not the same, and some people have problems getting the Water down and others don't.

Thank you all for your feedback!

I have to be honest here; just this week I was afraid of the same thing. My surgery date was 4/10. Two weeks of liquids and I was shooting them down like a pro. I started on pureed foods late last week. And it was going better than expected. I started wondering - is my pouch working? Is it small enough? Then on Monday, while taking my morning meds, I chewed and swallowed my Multivitamin too quickly. And what did I do? Yep, threw up.

Lesson learned. Pouch is small enough and working just fine.

Just remember even though our incisions are almost healed, our stomachs are still healing from surgery. I think we should expect some variations in our eating/drinking abilities until they are completely healed.

Hope all is well and Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
