Banded yesterday 10/2

Recommended Posts

I am still pretty uncomfortable. It was hard to sleep last night because we don't have a recliner. I was propped up in bed but wasn't very comfortable. I was pretty nauseated after surgery and was heaving a bit, which made me more sore. During my procedure they noticed I had a hernia so the doctor repaired that too. I don't know if that is why I'm still hurting so much.

I am having bad gas pains. I would feel them as soon as I woke up in recovery. It is still hard for me to take full deep breaths. It just kills my chest and shoulders. I've had the heating pad on my back most of the day and ice on my incisions.

Today I've had a Protein drink and some broth and Water. Nothing too exciting! I've been sleeping a lot. I'm still sort of out of it so I will post more later.

I really enjoy reading the posts, but every time I read about someone having a rough time it worries me. When I don't read them for a few days I feel really optimistic about the surgery. (mine is on Oct 16th). I guess its because I had a laproscopic gall bladder surgery 3 years ago and a hernia repair this past January with absolutely no pain or gas issues.

My Dr says the Lap Band should be much like the gall bladder and probably I won't have any problems, but then I read about all the gas and pain and I get worried again.

Has anyone had this surgery without a lot of pain and gas ? :)

Judy

i was banded the day before you, and i also found/find sleeping to be difficult. i don't have a recliner either. i actually feel less pain when sitting upright, as opposed to laying down. the worst pain for me is trying to sit up from a sleeping position...ugh!

fortunately for me, i have not experienced any nausea. i am drinking just fine. i do however have gas! it was up behind my left breast last night and today...and quite excruciating. but i'm feeling better at the moment...so relief does come!

hang in there. hope you get past the sleepless nights soon!

Wow you guys, can you believe it's finally happening? Now MistyDTX, sbee, and catnip_addict are already done. I'm thinking of you all, and will bow my head tonight and say a prayer for you all. I also see I have some new names to add to the TENacousTENS list, so I'll get to working on that! Keep posting about your post-op experiences, the good/bad/ugly because we're all here for you!

I truly appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. I feel better than I did when I posted earlier. I am still feeling the gas pain in my left shoulder. I've been walking in the house but I guess it hasn't worked it's way out yet.

I took a shower this afternoon and felt much better after. I am not nauseous anymore at all. Today I had 2 Boost shakes, some broth and Water. I highly suggest having cough drops on hand when you get home. My throat hurt really bad and I probably wouldn't have made it without them!

I've napped a lot today. I finally was able to get comfortable and get some rest. God bless my DH, he's been the best through all of this. Our phones have an intercom and if I need anything I just give him a buzz and he's always right there. It has been hard not being able to hold my DD. She's 15 months old and I think this may be the hardest part of it for me. My discharge papers said no lifting or carrying for 6 weeks...there's no way I will be able to go that long without holding her!

Good luck to everyone and I'll keep you posted!

I am glad to hear you are feeling a little better in second post. My surgery is the 9th and hopefully I am posting on the same day. One thing I did notice and was wondering, you drank Boost - doesn't your doc required Clear Liquids for at least 3 days? Our Protein Drinks are liquid like cough Syrup. Just an interesting observation for me, there are so many differences in the pre-op and post op diets. I hope you sleep well tonight and we will keep you in our prayers. Wish you continue success in your road to better health!

At my support group, a recently banded woman gave a useful tip: get yourself some sports bras, because underwires are REALLY uncomfortable right after surgery. (sorry guys, this ain't for you!)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
