Recommended Posts

I have decided to have gastric bypass. I have the first appointment on July 27 th. Can anyone tell me what the prerequisites are? I have had a sleep study , cardiac stress test, chest ct, egd , colon and labs through all my other doctors. Also anyone know what Bcbs want a patient to do before they will pay. I have a bmi of 49. No medical conditions except copd and RA.

I also had to do a physical therapy evaluation and a nutritional evaluation as well as 6 months supervised diet.

The wait is difficult for Sure! Had my required endoscopy and colonoscopy two days ago. I have a hiatal hernia and some gastric inflammation. I hope the hiatal hernia does not keep me from having surgery.
I don't know yet whether I have to do a pre-op diet and he hasn't said anything about losing any weight. My sheet with all of my appointments and surgery date says I have to be 220 or less on surgery day. 220 is the wait I was the first day I went in for an appointment. That puts me at almost a37 BMI. I would like to be 150. It's nice to have people to wait with through the month of June. I have a feeling it is going to go fast

My hiatal hernia didn't affect my first WLS.. they'll just repair it while they're in there. That recovery was painful, as every movement of your diaphragm hurts. Hang in there! Looking forward to following your story

I was scheduled for July 3rd and got bumped up to June 5rh! So I'm 4 days PostOp. I'm so relieved it's over! I'm sore but doing really well. I'm excited for the future!

I'm still overwhelmed, but getting the hang of it.

I'm scheduled for July 6th. The first email I sent to my clinic was June 6th and they scheduled me for 1 month later. I am on a 2 week rather strict Atkins (my nutritionist wants me to lose 16lbs by surgery, I have to weigh in once a week) Then I do 2 weeks of Protein Shakes **fingers crossed it shows up by then**I'm in Calgary Alberta so shipping time on Vitamins and Protein shakes takes its time...

As for work I'm only allowed to take July 5th off to fly to San Diego, and then surgery the next morning, and since my boss is kind of an a-hole, I have to be back at work on July 10th, just 3/4 days after surgery. I don't expect my productivity to be very high for the first week or two haha...jerk

As far as getting any tests done, I don't have to have any that I've been told about. Anything they need will be done either as soon as I arrive or the next morning prior to surgery. Mind you I paid via mastercard as I don't think the work insurance covers this type of surgery.

Also, mildly nervous and excited!

Congrats on being through surgery! Were you nervous going into it? Did you have any hesitation? I am scheduled for July 10th and I am freaking out!

Oh my goodness that's fast! Where in San Diego are you having surgery? My surgeon (in San Diego) insists on you staying within half an hour of the office for at least the first week! Flying that soon after surgery is REALLY not safe, I'm already worried for you. ☹️ Your boss is a jerk! This is medical, it's not like you're taking vacation! Does your surgeon know you're working/flying that soon after the procedure?

I'm actually headed to Tijuana, but my flight lands in San Diego and they pick me up to escort us across the border. They know I'm from Canada, its quite popular for people from Calgary to travel to Mexico for surgery (the price up here is $19,000-$22,000). Haha and yes my boss is a jerk, but if I come back and I need more time off I probably wont mind telling him he needs to find a replacement for a few extra days. Unfortunately if I'm not working, I'm not getting paid. I would still rather heal properly and tell him where to stick it, than risk any extra complications, especially being so far from where I'm getting it done.

I kind of feel like I'm in a bit of a "suck it up and deal with it" situation unfortunately. I've had surgery in Miami and flown back 3 days later and been fine. I assure you that surgery was far more painful than this one will be.:) I try not to worry, it isn't going to help me, its stressful enough as is but I appreciate the support.

Well hey, I live in San Diego so if you need anything I'll see how I can help!

July is coming up pretty fast. When they scheduled out my surgery 4 months I was crushed but it's creeping up pretty fast. The nerves are too. I've never been so scared before. Normally surgeries are old hat for me.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
