The whoosh effect and stalls

Recommended Posts

I had my RNY surgery on 1/26. I started at 214. Immediately afterwards I was 222 with fluids. Then it dropped to 204 pretty quickly, where it stalled for two weeks. Then I had a drop to 197, and it stalled for a couple of weeks. I read a ton of posts on here and elsewhere, but nothing I found explained stalls as well as this article

http://100down.org/the-whoosh-effect

I think I'm starting a whoosh, after two weeks of not budging the last few days I lost .2, .4, 1.4 lbs each day.

DH and I were talking and if you read the article, the starvation hypothesis makes sense, so while I can't cheat I will make more of an effort to consistently hit 1000-1200 kcal and convince my body I'm not trying to kill it (I had a couple of days this week more like 650-800). To that end I am adding Peanut Butter strategically.

I also think this plus the weight memory theory go together well: my sticking points are all places where my body 'lived' for awhile.

Do people know about this? Why am I not seeing it discussed everywhere?

Interesting. I'm a month out. I'm currently getting 250-300 daily. I've been stuck at the same weight for several weeks

I have the same issue. I'm three weeks out and I'm down 22 pounds from my surgery date but I haven't lost anything for 8 days. I can only eat between 1-2 oz. at a time. I had my follow up yesterday and my doctor said to just wait it out. The scale would eventually move.

I think the article is really good and explains a lot.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
