How is it possible one gains weight after Gastric Bypass despite Dumping Syndrome

Recommended Posts

I am trying to figure out how is it possible that people gain weight despite the dumping syndrome that exists in Gastric Bypass patients, virtually due to the fact that the Pylorus is not intact? If anyone has answers to this, please feel free to share. Is it that people have figured out how to cheat the punishment factor of Dumping, and get around it?

Thanks,

Gabriel

People can still eat way too many calories/carbs after WLS, its difficult to do in one sitting but not hard to do over the course of a day, We still have to watch what we're eating, make healthy choices, etc.

I have had days that I've gained, usually if I've gone out to eat or gotten takeout and then grazed on the leftovers.

I take cholestyramine and the problem is gone. has your doctor recommended this to you?

The overall point to my question, is that since the pylorus is no longer intact due to the Bypass procedure itself, that sole aspect means that naturally, as a result, the sugars are going to digest too quickly into the small intestine. This is what causes the dumping syndrome. Therefore if Bypass patients have this physical issue, how can they overcome the dumping syndrome and still gain the weight? It seems like fighting with fire.

You can gain weight not eating any sugar at all. Post ops can still eat way too many calories and avoid dumping syndrome by eating things like pizza.

And again, most people don't have the dumping syndrome (according to my doctor). Everyone is different. I'm still finding out what I can or cannot tolerate (honey yes, sugar in very small doses, sorbitol no).

Dumping syndrome does not prevent sugars from being absorbed/weight gain. It's a physical response that causes cramping but it doesn't stop absorption entirely.

Supposedly, if you don't drink or eat too quickly while eating things with sugar you are less likely to dump because the food shouldn't be forced into the intestines too quickly. However, with the pyloric valve missing I am not sure it would be possible to manage dumping syndrome effectively.

I get dumping syndrome from even 1 chocolate chip! Or from even skim milk or anything with sugar elements in it! I get the sweats feel like I am gonna puke and feel like I have the very worst hangover I ever had for an hr or two. As far as weight gain well grazing is the most common reason or eating past full.

Sugar doesn't make me dump - it's the fat in steaks and fried eggs, etc. I learned that I can have sugar with no problems at all. However, with this new discovery means weight gain, which I did during the holidays. But that is OK as I was underweight and looked sick. Now I'm where I should be but I have to be VERY careful not to overdo it on the sweets.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
