Use of Blood thinners pre op

Recommended Posts

I don't take them, but I was given a shot of Heparin during my prep.

My mother has taken Coumadin for many years, and when she has required surgery, they have given her a program to wean off her medication for a week or so prior to the procedure.

If she ever requires emergency surgery, maybe they'll just shoot her full of Vitamin K - who knows. :)

Hey all,

I met a woman and she asked me to post this question. Is there anyone out there who was on blood thinners prior to surgery and did this have any impact on their surgery?

weight.png

Starting weight 319 7/5/07

surgery weight 314 8/30/07

current weight 289 9/28/07:clap2:

1st goal 40 lbs by 12/8/07 (my 47th b-day present)

Anything that thins the blood, including aspirin, will be a factor in surgery. You really should discuss this with your surgeon.

I didn't take any blood thinners prior to surgery. However, when I got to the hospital they placed these pump things on my legs they pumped up and down. I also received 5 blood thinner shots after surgery. (Not sure what i got during)

I also had the compression boots after surgery for a day. Post-op I was on Lovenox for 7 days, every 12 hours. I was told to stop taking anything that thinned my blood for 10 days pre-op.

My doc said to stop the blood thinner a week prior to surgery. He told me to go back on it a week after surgery, which I did. The problem now is that I can't stabilize the Protime readings and they keep changing my dosage. My Protime is either too high or too low. It's been just over a month now and we're just now starting to get a handle on it since I've been on mushies. I expect it will be difficult to maintain the proper range until after I am on real food, and my system stabilizes. Before surgery I was always right on, and never had to vary my dosage.

I had my pre-op appt today and Dr. Fox told me that they give you a shot of blood thinner before the surgery and use the foot pumps to reduce the risk of you forming a blood clot. Blood clots are very dangerous, even deadly in some cases. So that is also why they want you up walking about an hour after surgery, he said. Hope this helps!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
