HellO! So I'v been hearing that Hair loss is an inevitable side effect of VSG. I guess the AMOUNT you lose, just like anything else, varies from person to person. but I was hoping someone might be able to give me at least SOME insight on what to expect. I am freaking out about it, so much so that I'm considering not even going through with my surgery. I'm already taking 10,000mcg of Biotin daily. If I am DILIGENT with my Vitamins post op, would it reduce the amount of hair loss?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Chrissy, I was where you are. I started this journey with what could only be kindly referred to as "baby fine" THIN hair. And the thought of losing it sickened me. Well, I am five months (almost) in and yup, hair is falling out. It started at about 3 months and I lose a good small fistful every morning. I take Biotin religiously, Shampoo every other day with Biotin and collagen shampoo, take my vitamins/flax seed, etc. And it falls out, and the biotin assists with new Hair growth. Not as quickly as it falls out. I got a perm about a month ago to give my hair some body. I can't say it helped. It is not the best side effect. But I am down 70 pounds, wearing "real person" clothes. Enjoying size 12 skirts and skinny jeans, crossing my legs, not being the biggest person in the room, and loving compliments that make me feel beautiful. I'd give all my hair to keep this. It will slow down (dr. says the loss haults when the weight loss does, so I am in NO HURRY, now, for the Hair loss to stop- I'd like to eek 30-40 more pounds out of this sleeve), and your hair will come back. Maybe not as full as before, but when the rest of your body feels this good. You can find a hair cut that works for you. YOu won't be bald, ut you will have thinner hair. But... it will match the rest of you! :) Relax. It is okay.

Honestly, the Constipation is worse! ;)

I would not forego surgery because of this concern. I'd visit with a trusted hair stylist before surgery and have him/her walk you through what to expect. You may just need a new 'do as you transition. I had no Hair loss until 4 months and it stopped coming out at 6 months. I take Biotin for regrowth. I've heard that Nioxin works well too. You can't prevent it but you can ensure that the regrowth is healthy and fast.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
