I've already lost 9 pounds

Recommended Posts

Since going to my orientation last week with Kaiser Insurance I weighed myself again this morning and I've dropped 9 pounds. They told us that during the 12 weeks of Options class we have to lose 10% I think of our body mass which they told me is 14 pounds for me and I haven't even started the classes yet and I've already lost 9 so excited. I have been eating healthier and I've been walking usually 3 miles a day.

Hi Monica where do you live? and do you have to do the 12 weeks of Options classes or longer I have heard some Kaiser's require longer than 12 weeks different areas. Where I live we only have to do the 12 weeks

I live in Valencia, CA. I'm doing the Options classes at Panorama City Kaiser and surgery will be at West LA Kaiser.

I have to do the 12 weeks of classes too. So far, things have been moving along really smoothly.

1/10 referred by PCP
1/24 orientation to Options
2/3 consult with program director/officially accepted into program
2/10 first Options class

They have also already scheduled me for my 6 week appointment with the program director. I was told at that point the EKG, chest x-ray, and other tests will be scheduled.

Congrats! Although my opinion is not the majority. I will recomend you don't do this! This surgery is scary and life altering. I REGRET decision. There are newer procedure coming out like the Gastric Ballon. I will always deal with complications from this extreme surgery!

Yes I cannot wait to start my Options class our class is a big class there's 30 people in it. It was the soonest class that was starting so of course everybody wanted it same thing with me the next one didn't start till April 7 and then one started in May..
They basically told us that during the 12 weeks you do all your preop's and lose your 10% then when you're finished with the class usually it takes about 1 to 2 weeks to get an appointment with the surgeon and then within a couple weeks after that you're scheduled to have your surgery.

They told me I would need to lose 14 pounds did they say what you needed to lose during your first class

I have tried every diet there is and have had success a little bit but never major I am ready for a life change to start over again I have heard that the gastric balloon is coming out but who knows when it will be out.
I also have had 3 friends who have done the gastric sleeve and had had success. In our class they did say that the majority of people do gain the weight back after 2 years back but if you do you what you're supposed to do and stick to the proper eating then you will be successful.

@TammyLee66 I am glad your friends are doing well. I would say try another hundred diets before tearing away a vital organ. We don't know how our aging process will be impacted...what if we need a heavy use of NSAIDs or face stomach cancer?? That's just me and something I wish I did. It's all too late. I can see how irational to think I will be healthy by taking away 80% of my vital organ.

Isn't it so scary that regain happens to most ppl! I lost most of my stomach and I can still regain? That can only mean that our stomachs are not the problem! Think about other reversible procedures where you have restriction and can still learn the same healthy food habits we should learn anyway.

All the best :)

AnneElliot if I can asked you what type of problems are you having? I do understand that yes we are having a portion of our stomach cut out.
And yes I do understand there are a lot of different things that could happen to any individual having this procedure with the classes we are taking you have one year to request to have surgery

@TammyLee66 severe acid reflux! I am on the highest dosage of PPIs. I never had acid reflux pre op. If I could tear out my throat and live I would do it lol.

I changed my diet completely. As alkhaline as possible. The consequences of severe acid reflux are serious and this us a direct cause of the sleeve.

Take that year and try anything else. I wish you all the best. Good health is within your reach and its not tied to the numv5on the scale ;)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
