Excessive coughing post op

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 days post-op and can't stop coughing. I quit smoking 7 weeks ago for the surgery and I feel like my lungs are cleaning themselves out but it's painful on my incisions every time I cough. Anyone else go through this?

I didn't smoke but I did cough and sneeze. Let me tell you, I thought i was going to DIE every single time. The pain lasted for a good month at LEAST. Just remember you've been cut open and scooped out so its bound to hurt. totally normal.

I hope you feel better! Hang in there!!

Are you coughing crap out of your lungs? It is bound to be painful on the incisions for sure. I'm not a smoker myself but have had some coughing and sneezing too. It does hurt but can bare it. Everyone has a different pain tolerance. If you continue to cough I'd check with my doctor just to be safe. Take care and best wishes!

Are you doing the deep breathing exercises to make sure you aren't getting Fluid in your lungs? The coughing thing might not be a big deal but it could also be something. Check in with your Surgeon's office if you don't have one of those breathing things where you have to exhale and make the ball raise up.

Try pressing/clutching a pillow to your abdomen when you cough or sneeze. A nurse gave me this tip when I had my gallbladder removed. It worked for me.

Hold a pillow over your tummy when you feel a coughing fit come on.

Coughing, sneezing and hiccups all hurt so early on. I have a great deal of sympathy and respect you for giving up the cigarettes! I have never smoked but I know it's hard to stop.

Hope it stops soon

I've never been a smoker and I had my sleeve done on 1/30 and the coughing did hurt so I took a couch pillow and put it between my stomach and the back of my couch and braced myself for coughing...it totally helps. Hope that helps for you but the pain of coughing gets better.

Thanks guys. I emailed my surgeon just to be on the safe side.

Sadly I am coughing up some nasty green mucus like stuff...been doing my breathing exercises and I feel like they're making it worse

Green mucus is not good. I'm very glad you emailed him. Could be a lung cold but if the breathing exorcises are making it worse that means you have a lot of Fluid in your lungs.

That's scary. Maybe he'll prescribe some antibiotics or something for that. I know Water in the lungs is not a good thing.

Its totally normal. I coughed up all kinds of nasty stuff after surgery. Its from the ventilator. Its good to cough it up. It stopped for me around 5 days post op. Once the coughing stops your smooth sailin. Good luck to you ❤

Don't take coughing lightly, always get it checked. Could be nothing ... normal after surgery housekeeping.

But could be pneumonia (any fever?) Or even a blood clot in the lung.

Let us know what the doc says!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
