How did you get through pre-op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

My 2 weeks pre-op diet starts Monday (January 30th). I bought my multi-Vitamins so I don't get malnourished. I have A LOT of Protein in stock & Clear liquids (case of diet Snapple, sugar free Kool-Aid, & Power Aid Zero). I think I'm pretty much prepared for the 2 weeks.

I'm nervous and excited. I know it'll be tough. For those that have already went through the 2-weeks pre-op liquid diet, what did you do to prepare? What's your advice on how to get through it? I'm so scared to fail. I don't want to be in the operating table just to not get the surgery done because I cheated the 2 weeks, etc... I'm determined to get through it but your stories are comforting so I can get an idea of what to expect.

Height 5'0"

Weight for consultation: 216 lbs.

Pre-op Weight: Unknown until January 20th.

My profile picture is not me. It's my "FitSpiration" body.

I did 18 days and it was hard however I kept in mind that it was for my own safety and made it easier for my surgeon to do the sleeve. It made me very tired and I can remember being in bed by 8pm some nights! I work full time so kept myself busy there, cleaned the house from top to bottom in prep for returning home after the surgery and focused on reading about the surgery, buying things in and walking the dog a lot.

You can do this!!

the first 3 days were the roughest.. be mentally prepared for the head hunger and possible headaches as your body detoxes.. dont shut yourself out from the world..keep yourself busy with things not surrounded around food.. best wishes you can do this!

I was required to do a 2 week pre op diet with shakes and small portions of chicken or fish and vegetables. No starch, no sugar, no caffeine.

So, the only day I was required to do liquids was the day before surgery.

My surgeon said he does not require liquid pre op for anyone with a BMI under 50, which I luckily am. Has anyone else had a Surgeon tell them they don't need the pre op liquid diet?

.Absolutely - a BMI requirement is not unusual and some like my doc don't do any special diet prior to the day before surgery for any of his patients, and from what I have seen, neither do most of the other long time DS surgeons. Further, the purely liquid diet is not really as common as one would think by reading these forums, as there is some adverse selection going on - those who don't have to do them don't complain about them! More commonly, those docs who do pre-op diets beyond the usual day before surgery thing, do some kind of low carb diet as that is the functional aspect of it from the liver condition perspective - a purely liquid diet provides no particular advantage; typically we see something like a meal or two per day of lean meats and veg and a Protein shake or two.

I am on day 2. I remind myself it is for the better. I have and end goal...only to start a new one post-surgery. I have been lucky that it hasn't been bad so far. I had a very mild headache today, but it didn't stop me from functioning.

My BMI is 41 & I'm still required to do the pre-op 2 weekS liquid diet.

Thank you to all those with their advice or sharing your experiences. The detox part is what I'm most afraid of. I know it will end soon one day at a time for those 14 days. These will probably be the longest 2 weeks of my life. LOL.

My surgeon only requires the day before surgery as a liquid diet, not sure if it natters what your bmi is or not, but mine was at 39 when I started this journey.

yes mine told me there was no need. I asked about the liver and he said no that is not the way they do it. Not sure how I felt about his answer.

I think it depends on the program. I have to see a nutricianist for 3 months one visit a month and track eating exercises and have documented some weightloss and healthy eating behavior for them to clear me for surgery. As they feel this ensures the best outcome for long term success. I am hoping for surgery in March and have 1 more visit with my nut in Feb. I have lost on my own and defiantly am making better choices pre surgery, so I Am sure that will help with pre surgey health .

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
