Why did you choose bypass?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm considering both Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve and trying to unspderstand why folks have chosen one over the other. I had thought for sure I wanted the sleeve to avoid the possible nutritional deficiencies and it just seemed like bypass had a lot of other issues like dumping, etc. the only reason I'm doubting my original plan is that I have acid reflux and have been on what's considered a low dose of omeprazole (20 mg daily) for about 7 years. I've read that for some people reflux can get really really bad after the sleeve. But there also seems to be stomach ulceration as a long term risk of bypass. Help! I feel paralyzed trying to make the right choice and afraid of the possible bad outcomes. I'd love to know why you all chose bypass over sleeve. Thanks!

Hi, I had the bypass. I was insulin resistant and took 100units of insulin 2 times a day plus 500mg of Metformin 2 times a day. I lost 132#'s in 6 months, some In contribute to having strictures (like scar tissue in the opening of my pouch) I got down to 117#'s which was way to low I looked horrible. I did gain 8#'s back but I have maintained my 125#'s for 3 years. I used to take 12 different medications, now I take 4 most for my blood pressure, I just don't know how to let the stress go. LOL I stress over everything. Any how when I was making my decision I'm 57 years old and this will be my only chance to at last lose the weight, which I have lost plenty of times but always gained it back plus more. I had great results BTW I am off all Diabetes meds and have been within my first month after surgery. I think this was a great decision on my part. Now you did say you have Reflux I have heard that it does make it worse with the Sleeve. And many need to have a revision to the Bypass. For myself it was "GO BIG OR GO HOME" one of the very best things I have ever done for myself. It rates up there with me getting married and giving birth to 2 children which are grown and has given me 8 beautiful grandkids. Good luck in your choice of surgeries.

I had bypass. I chose it because it has the best rate of success, it helps some of my other existing med problems, and it has the fastest rate of weight loss. I just follow what the docs tell me not to take and not to do and roll with it. No carbs. No NSAIDS. Omeprazole. Vitamins. Done. I am very happy in my choice. My only regret is not having done it sooner.

I had acid reflux and I didn't want to risk it getting worse with the sleeve.

Acid reflux is very common with the sleeve. It's uncommon with the bypass. Ulceration is also not common with the bypass.

Bypass. Most people struggle more long term with sleeve. Its too easy to gain back the weight.

I had serious reflux issues prior to RNY. My surgeon told me the bypass would eliminate my reflux. I'm 3 years out and have no issues with reflux. Dumping is not really an issue either for me but I know my limits when eating things that aren't Bariatric friendly.

I would go over your medical history with your doctor and determine which surgery will give you the best outcome.

Good luck on your journey!

I wanted the Sleeve for the same reason. My surgeon wouldn't do the sleeve because I had Gird and Barrett's Esophagus. Since my Bypass, I haven't had one ounce of acid reflux! GONE! That's worth it in itself! I haven't had any Vitamin deficiencies, but I did lose a lot of my hair. It's growing back now though. That is common when losing rapidly. I take a high dose of Biotin daily and that's helping I think! Either surgery is great but, the sleeve will make Gerd worse. :) Good Luck to ya!

I chose Bypass because I was a diabetic and had pretty bad acid reflux. I'm only 6 days post op and my sugar levels are totally normal.

I chose bypass because it is the gold standard of weight loss surgeries and has the highest long-term success rates.

Surgeons have preformed Bypass's for over 30 years. Its has the most research and is the gold standard as someone else mentioned. Plus it helps u eat right or u get dumping. So it almost forces u to choose better food.

Also bypass for all of the reasons above. Mine was a revision from a lap band.

(Still Pre op)

I'm an emotional eater, and the psychologist agreed that dumping from bypass would help me curb that. (Be careful, though- I'm told you can overeat through dumping to where it doesn't happen anymore)

My mom died of gastro-esophagael cancer last fall; her only symptom before stage 4 diagnosis was bad reflux. Knowing that's in my family, I wanted to avoid reflux from the sleeve.

I also have PCOS, and the "clock is ticking."

I'm considering a revision from a lapband/plication to a bypass. Did your surgeon do the revision at the same time he removed the band? Are you happy so far?

I revised from lapband to bypass because 1) I had reflux and sometimes sleeve patients have to revise to bypass due to reflux. I didn't want to have another surgery down the road. 2) bypass is the gold standard with the best success statistics and longest history 3) I have a lot of weight to lose and needed the biggest bang for my buck.

I've lost 109 lbs since my revision surgery day six months ago. I am happy with my decision.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
