Period related question for female sleevers

Recommended Posts

Hey gals,

So I've had this issue ever since I got my first period because (according to my doctors) I've been overweight. Although I wasn't that overweight as a teenager, I had gained into my twenties and let me tell you, I have never had a consistent period. Maybe a dozen times over the years. I'm 24 now and I'm at 275. It will only regulate if I take birth control but I'm not on it right now because I'm not sexually active for the time being and I also don't want to have it mess with me trying to lose weight.

Had anyone else been in the same boat and did it come back post op after significant weight loss?

People always tell me check my thyroid but its fine. Wondering if I have PCOS or something. I also have thin hair which sucks!

I say go to the doctor and cover all your bases. Honestly if there is any question on your mind it's important you do this for your own peace. I personally have issues with my thyroid and that had been my "normal" until I was diagnosed. So many things effect your body composition, your success depends on you nourishing and helping your body in any way possible. Also losing weight impacts your body so much so don't assume the worst. Your Dr. Can help you with your success I would venture to say better then any one of us can.

Definitely contact a gynecologist. But i had the same issues. For years. I thought it was a fluke that the last time i lost a significant amount of weight in a short amount of time i got my period two months in a row. Now i realized that it was my weight. I've been off birth control since 2 weeks before my surgey. I've had a period every month since. The timing has been a little off but pretty consistent. Before this i needed birth control to regulate my periods. So for ME i think it was mainly my weight. Ask your doc but i wouldn't worry TOO much if you're going to be losing weight. Your cycles are probably going to be out of whack for a bit and you might get a regular period after losing a bit of weight. Only time will tell.

My periods have always stopped when I hit 230 lbs. We have five kids and I never got pregnant weighing more than 190.

Do keep in mind that a weight loss as little as 10% can trigger ovulation!

I have PCOS and it sounds like you do too. Do you have body hair or facial hair issues? Acne? Irritable often? Extreme cramps? These are questions for you to ask yourself.....none of my business, lol.....but birth control, metformin, and spironalactone are the typical treatment combo for it. Metformin is even for when you are not diabetic and the other two also have different uses for people with PCOS. You will have it a lot harder trying to lose weight with PCOS and treatment is essential to get your health and weight loss going in the right direction. If you do have it, holding off on treatment would be counterproductive and not a good idea for weight loss. Ask your gynecologist because they will have better information than a general physician.

I had never had a normal cycle from the time I was 12 until 34. I would go anywhere from 2 to 8 months without a period. Two months after my surgery my period started and it has come back every 28 days since, like clockwork! I do have diagnosed PCOS but it was obviously weight related.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
