I'm struggling with muscle loss.

Recommended Posts

I figured that I would come back here and update. I've been averaging 1100 calories, over 100 Protein and upped my carbs to 70-75. My weight has stalled but I don't care, it will drop again. I've kicked my own ass working out and now I need someone to kick mine because I did what I tend to do, I went OVERKILL! My body is not happy with me at the moment. I'm forcing myself to not do anything but work until Monday (I'm on call). I'm sore in a good way except for my shoulders and right bicep. I've been working daily on different muscles and obviously I've been physical at work as well. Wednesday I worked my upper body pretty darn good and I felt awesome yesterday but I had to do a lot of lifting yesterday and that pushed my body harder. Live and learn. Thank you all for the help.

Yesterday was the two week stop that I was dreading. I've been sick since Monday and my 5 man crew is reduced to 2. There really isn't a way for me to not work.

The good news is that I kicked ass! It was so much easier than the last time. I'm definitely going to keep up what I've been doing for the last couple of weeks. It is working well. Thanks again for all of the help!

@ Before I quit my corporate job and went out on my own, I used to manage a warehouse for a retail company. We were ALWAYS under staff. And I had to outwork men almost half my age to show them who was who. I know what it is like.

@@LittleBill

This is a corporate job as well and I love what I do but for the responsibility, the on call and the fact that my guys have to have a commercial driver's license with Hazmat endorsement we don't pay enough. My company does a 3% raise every 13 months and with the wages being so low it feels like a slap in the face to see how little their raise is. There is a company that doesn't require and of that and they pay $2 more to start plus a guaranteed minimum bonus of $400 a month. They also only work 4 days a week. I can't compete with that.

Suits in an office who don't understand how the world really works. Some bean counter with soft hands who never did a day of real work convinced a bunch of other people that they can find people who will do more work for less money just because.

@ Hi question, are you taking statins? I was on them for 11 years prior to surgery. They have horrible side effects of muscle waisting and getting exhausted when exercising. It was almost impossible for me to do my job of walking dogs. I stopped taking them more than a year ago and still have not regained my muscle. My legs are better but I still have to take breaks washing windows, washing my hair, or painting, anything using my arms, no strength at all in my arms. I'm hoping I get it back one day. For me it did not start right away I only noticed the symptoms a few years ago. I was feeling like an 80 year old woman (I was 50).

My doc had me on statins for a while and I developed horrible muscle pain, like the flu but worse. I stopped them and refused to take them. Caused stress between me and my doc for a long time. She was convinced it was something else and that I needed them. Then I learned in nursing school that statins have a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis where the muscles break down and are "eaten" by the body, and it severely damages your kidneys. I don't know if I was on the road to that or not, but it tells me I was right to stop them. My research said that coq10 is essential for protecting/rebuilding the muscle. You might ask your doctor about that supplement (I don't know of any contraindications, but it's always good to check) and see if it helps.

When I stoped taking the statins I did increase my Co q 10 for a year so I am not on any medication right now and my diabetes is in remission

Man, I am getting frustrated. I'm getting 60-80 grams of Protein a day and 64+ ounces of fluids. I keep losing muscle. I workout most days with a total gym, free weights, exercise bike and a simply fit board. I have 125 pounds on a hand truck and I've noticed that it is getting really tough to get it up steps. In general I feel weaker. I've always been strong just by working and now with working out I'm struggling. Unfortunately I can't afford a personal trainer at the moment or I would be going that direction. Any suggestions?

I was told by my nutritionist that because of how much I work out, I need to up my Protein and my fluids. To take in as much hydration as possible as this will cause your muscle to shed some of the Water weight. To build muscles, it takes a lot of fluids.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
