For all you losers.......

I have a question. After you got your band and were on your weight loss journey with your new way of eating, did you eat the same foods as before, (basically crap), but just in little portions, or did you REAllY clean up and have a tiny bit of Protein, etc. etc.

I ask, because, on various boards I hear people eating everything from nachos, margaritas to a few bites of chicken with some veggies.

I know it's Protein first, then veggies, then low glycemic carbs or something.

I'm pre-band and curious!

I have changed my eatting -- I eat high Protein and low carbs and watch calories. I don't go to extremes as Atkins diet with carbs - but I do watch them and make healthier choices.

Best wishes on your new journey!

I totally changed my lifestyle. I started by going organic, and concentrating on whole unprocessed foods, and later became vegetarian.

Personally I do not subscribe to the "protein first" thing. I eat a balanced diet of veggies, protein and carbs. Because we need all three to fuel our bodies.

Best of luck!

I have changed my eating habits as well. I eat high Protein low carb. Mainly chicken, fish, veggies, and wheat crackers. I haven't had junk food in almost 5 months. Can say that I rarely miss it. I feel great eating the way I am and exercising, so I can't complain.

I changed my food choices completely and drastically. I used to live on burgers and Diet Coke. Now I rarely eat crap foods that taste sooo good. I have found that if I eat a lot of carbs I just don't feel well. I feel so much better today vs. pre-band.

My diet was so horrible pre-band that I sincerely doubt a child would grow eating the same diet as me.

One thing I think you will find about banding is that your tastes change. What you used to like you no longer care for and things that used to make you gag are pretty darn good all the sudden. When you burn fat that fat turns into various chemicals that leave your body via sweat, urine, breath, and saliva (keytones). It's the keytones that really change your sense of taste and you might find that you don't care for the bad foods as much. With time it becomes habit and before you know it you are actually craving the stuff that is good for you.

The band is an amazing thing in so many ways. Congrats on being a pre-bandster. It changes your life in ways you never dreamed.

Hello!

I have really changed my eating habits...I am eating high Protein and low carbs... I have a hard time eating something that is not going to help me nutritionally because I don't want to waste the calories on it.

My idea is to get to goal as quickly as possible...and then see if I am still interested in those other things!

;)

The main reason I ate before the band was for my head appetite and the taste. I would choose a food I loved and then eat mountains of it. Now after the band, I know that whatever I choose to eat at some point, it's not going to be very much. I can look at certain things (such as a hamburger) and go, "Okay, I've love to stuff a whole cheeseburger in my mouth and gulp it down with some fries, but I know once I start eating it that the bread is going to come back on me (most likely) if I don't take just a few small pieces and the beef will go down veeerrrryyyyy slowly. I will be taking more time figuring out a way to get the darned thing to go down my throat than I will take to actually relish and enjoy it. It's funny....but when you have to take such a long time eating something...the fun goes out of it pretty much. Then eventually you realize that you aren't thinking about that food "in that way" anymore.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
