I had to get one with my blood work for insurance purposes. They haven't submitted my paperwork yet. So we'll see. I hope I'm not doing all this to be denied.

Mine did a drug panel and a nicotine test. I live in CO and am a medical marijuana patient for Migraine headaches. Honestly I would err on the side of safety. I quit for 2 months through my pre-op shenanigans. I wanted this more then I cared about suffering for a couple of days off and on. Heavy smokers can take up to 2 weeks to clear on a blood panel. Light smokers can take as little as 3-4 days. I have read elsewhere that some facilities do urine screens and marijuana takes up to 30 days to clear naturally as it's stored in fat cells. No regrets I was happy to stop for the time being so I wouldn't be spending the days leading up in panic because I didn't just nip it in the bud (hehe )

Edit; my class coordinator mentioned I needed to be off of nicotine and thc for a month before my date

Yeah ima have to quit for a while anyway because now I'm being considered for a portion that does drug screenings

Nicotine also interferes with the healing process.

THC is not a problem here at all (Oregon), but my NP did say no smoking and no edibles. Tinctures, oils, and the like are fine, though. However, she does not allow pot, alcohol, or tobacco within three days before surgery.

I take tincture sublingually for pain whenever I need it....which is less and less as I lose weight and the stress on my joints eases.

Sorry this is a bit old, I hope it's in time to help. When I had my EGD the anesthesiologist asked me if I use marijuana and I was honest and told him yes. He told my surgeon and she told me she'd test me the morning of surgery, and if I was positive she wouldn't do the surgery. I found out she doesn't always drug test but because I told the anesthesiologist I did use marijuana, she would test me for it. This was a month before my surgery. I weighed over 300 pounds and smoke pretty much daily. Marijuana is stored in the fat cells. There was no way I could do that (although I tried). I tested myself before and was still positive. I had to substitute urine because I wasn't going to let something out of my control stop me from getting a surgery I desperately needed and that I had done everything required of me for months. Not only that but I have bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, and ADD, and marijuana helps me with those. I'm on a couple different medications but consider marijuana one of my medicines. If I lived somewhere it was legal I'd definitely be able to have a medical marijuana card. Anyways, my surgeon didn't end up testing me after all that!

As for the munchies, I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I get them. But since the beginning of November I've lost 40 pounds(half of that time I was smoking daily.) My surgery was the 20th and I've lost 15 pounds since. I've started smoking again since the surgery as well. It's all about changing habits and not giving into temptation. I had to get out of the habit of snacking all the time, and that included times when I was high. If I feel like I have the munchies I ask myself if I'm really hungry and if I'm not I will tell myself "you're not hungry, you're just in the habit of eating.) I freeze zero calorie lemonade and eat that if I'm really feeling deprived. And I drink lots and lots of water! Sometimes I eat when I'm high but that's because it's dinner time. And I only eat the amount I'm supposed to.

Please no judgmental comments. I'm not saying that I was right or that anyone else should do what I did. But I did do what I had to do to get the surgery and I'm not sorry!

Anyways..based on other responses I'm thinking it just depends on the surgeon!

Also, it depends on when your surgery is, how much you weigh, your metabolism, and how frequently you use marijuana. If you do have to get tested you might be able to get clean in time. You can google how long it'll take to get it out of your system to get an idea of how much time you need.

Good luck to you!

There is a mouth swab check to make sure a patient isn't using immediately pre op and that would be enough if patients where more honest about their inhaled marijuana use. Smoking anything increases mucus production and narrows you airway. Either can be an issue when you are having anesthesia.

Lots of pot smokers make the claim that they don't inhale as much smoke as tobacco smokers but I know more than one or two people who "wake and bake" and stay baked until the go back to bed at night. Your Dr probably knows someone like this too.

The best thing to do is talk honestly with your doctor and let him/her know how much marijuana you smoke and then developed a pre op plan, like switching to tincture or articles, that works for you AND makes your surgery as safe as possible.

Thank you for your response. Im not a heavy smoker and weight 265. My surgeon hasn't asked or said anything about it and after reading through the packet I got during my dietician evaluation it only stated no nicotine. I still need to detox for this position I'm trying to get although I'm site it's out of my system by now

I don't smoke often, I'm more of a social smoker so it's long periods between my sessions. My surgery most likely won't be until mid or late January so I'll just stop until then

BubblesOhSoSleeved that's another reason I was upset about what my surgeon did. In the orientation, in the packet I got, and during discussions with my surgeon, they talked a lot about absolutely no nicotine a month before surgery, and if you do test positive for nicotine the day of surgery, they will cancel your surgery, etc. They never once talked about marijuana, so I assumed it wasn't an issue. Not only that, but on all of the hundreds of papers I had to fill out (such as medical history questionnaires from the surgeon, dietician, and social worker) I was completely honest about my marijuana use because I figured it's always best to be honest with your surgeon, and also that way if there was a problem with my marijuana usage or anything else they would talk to me about it. They didn't, so I figured that meant it was okay. Then an entire month after that, only a month before surgery, my surgeon told me if I tested positive for marijuana she wouldn't do the surgery on me. Not only that but she got a total attitude with me, as if I had tried to pull one over on her or trick her or something, even though I had been honest the entire time. I was very upset with the entire situation. I would've had no problem getting clean if only I had known in time. If anyone had bothered reading the papers I spent hours filling out, they would've been able to tell me a lot sooner that it was a deal breaker. Grr it still makes me mad but oh well, I got the surgery and that's all that matters!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
