Surgery 11/30

Recommended Posts

I just had my surgery Wednesday and just came home from the hospital today. Idk why but I haven't told anyone in my family besides my husband and my sister who lives with me. I think I am just worried people will judge me or feel like I took the easiest way out. I even feel like the nurses were a little rude. I never was offered my meds, I had to ask for them each time and last night they kept shutting off my bell and then a nurse would come in and tell me they are working on it, this happened at least 3 times. It took almost an hour before I got my nausea meds. I definitely don't feel like this has been easy. I am sipping my Water frequently but I get very nauseous when I sip the milk. I guess I just need some support from someone who has been here in my shoes! How long did it take before it stops hurting when you sip your water or take your meds?

Hello :)

I'm sorry that you had to deal with nurses that were rude and inattentive. I had my sleeve surgery on 11/14 and spent one night in the hospital. I had one nurse that was really great... she was my night nurse. Then the nurse that came on at 7 in the morning was awful. After they stopped my pump med, and I was successfully sipping on Water, broth, juice, my nurse didn't give me any liquid pain med for a few hours. I was REALLY hurting and I needed something. She said she would come in, but she didn't. My husband and I went looking for her, and saw her sitting outside. She then told me she would be in soon, but I waited another hour and a half. So I am sure that a lot of people can relate to you in that area. Just be glad you are home.

I only told my immediate family about my sleeve surgery. I didn't want others knowing, I guess I didn't want them to judge me either... so I can identify with you on that one.

Also, I was given hydrocodone in liquid form for my pain med. And I was given these little anti-nausea pills, which I took for about 3 days. My nausea only lasted 3 days, so I didn't need the pills after that. The pain med didn't make me nauseated. And I also take other meds at bedtime, so I had to cut them in half and take them with Water before bed. I had no problems with nausea while taking those.

So I would say give it a couple more days and hopefully the nausea will pass for you. Hopefully some others will comment and tell you how their experience was.

Good luck and take good care :)

Oh yes, you asked about the pain... for the first few days the liquid hydrocodone helped with the pain, but never did completely take it away. So expect the pain to stick around a few days... but everyone is different. I am still dealing with pain... I have a hematoma and my left side hurts, but the incision areas don't hurt at all anymore.

Hello,

Thank you for your advice. So you are a couple weeks ahead of me, what phase of the diet are you on now? Is there anything you're having trouble tolerating? I can't drink milk, it is making me incredibly sick. I was thinking of maybe trying again tomorrow to see if it's any better.

I am six weeks out. I stopped prescription pain meds day five. It was about ten days before I stopped having esophageal spasms when I drank something cold or fast. When I started soft foods it was like the heavens parted and a choir of angels sang. Now I often forget I had it done unless I'm eating. Then I am surprised when I'm full after a few bites and I'm thrilled it's just as easy as listening to my body. I still tire easily but it's not bad.

I had mine done 11/28. I had these spasms very badly. I still have them, but the intensity is decreasing day by day. I found that if i just suck on a popsicle i didnt have the spasms and i am still staying hydrated. I think one popsicle has almost 4 ounces of Fluid.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
