Protein shakes... yuck.

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 11/18. I am feeling well aside from some heartburn issues which seem to be improving a little each day (I hope that I didn't just jinx myself). My main issue at this point is that I am struggling to get enough Protein.< /p>

I'm only getting between 30-50 grams of protein a day, primarily from Atkins shakes which only contain 15g each. I've tried Premier Protein and Slimfast (recommended by the nutritionist) but they are just so gross and spending an hour forcing myself to drink one... yuck. I've tried adding unflavored Protein powder to strained cream Soups but that also has started to gross me out.

I think that once I can start eating purees and adding the Protein Powder to those -- hopefully this weekend -- I will have an easier time, but did anyone else feel this way and did you face any ill effects due to lack of protein.

On a positive note, I have lost 12lbs since surgery! I'm about to be under 200lbs, something that I haven't been for over a year!

Which Premier Protein did you try? It also makes a HUGE difference if you drink it over ice.

My favorite flavors are caramel, banana cream and strawberry. I also use vanilla in half a cup of coffee

I quit drinking Protein shakes at soft foods. I just limited my food intake to 1/2c, 4 times a day and ate lots of fish and cottage cheese. While I have always really enjoyed the Premier Protein pre surgery. I can no longer stomach them for a second.

The banana cream. It sounded sooooo good... not so much. I think that I am also just sick of sweet stuff at this point.

I mix 1/2 and 1/2 chocolate and vanilla Premier together. I've also added a small amount of coconut extract and almond extract to the chocolate. It has to be COLD!!! The thing about Premier shakes vs. unflavored Protein, is the Premier has all the essential Vitamins and nutrients that you also need. The unflavored Protein is just whey protein and there are no other nutrients or Vitamins.

does your plan allow for greek yogurt at this point? mine considered it a "full liquid" so you could have that to boost your Protein. or incoporate a cup of fairlife skim milk a day - 13grams of Protein.< /p>

instead of the ready to drink shakes, have you tried any of the Syntrax nectar flavors that you just mix with Water? they're fruity and not as thick. I mixed mine with crystal light lemondae to cut down on the "proteiny" taste.

I had chocolate and Vanilla premiere Protein and was sick of them really fast. I bought banana cream and strawberry and incorporated them too. I only like them when they are cold. Just try mixing them up. Hopefully that helps. They are really the best source of Protein while you have to drink liquids. Good luck!

I wish people would understand that the Protein requirement isn't a suggestion but a prescription and just drink the damn shakes. Sometimes we have to do things we don't like for our own good.

I know that's going to piss people off, but my god people sound like children not wanting to eat their spinach.

That's easier for some people than others. If I try to make myself eat/drink something I can't stand, I will throw it up. Every time. I get frustrated when people say "just buck up and eat/drink it". I literally can't.

Get some GENEPRO Protein powder and mix it in broth. I did that when I wanted something warm and savory rather than cold and sweet.

I guess i am one of the people who taste the difference. I don't care what they say, the difference is real and it's wretched. I tried to mix gene pro in a cup of coffee per the hot or cold mix instruction and all the powder just floated to the top and sat there like a crust that had to be broken in order to access the liquid. Blech. Now I just mix a scoop of the gross stuff with 2 ounces of Powerade zero and shoot it. It's the only way I can get that stuff down.!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
