It is getting closer

Recommended Posts

It is getting closer to my surgery date dec. 5th and it seems like all the threads seem to be about regretting surgery or or people having so much trouble with the surgery. I know its just my nerves but before i had a date seemed like everyone was posting before and after pics or they were having comical discussions about bananas (i have no idea) but it seemed fun. They were posting positive stuff like what they are now doing with there lives. I know i need to hear about the good and the bad this surgery is not to be taking lightly i realize its probably nerves not from not surviving but surviving and being left mangled or things just going way wrong. Anyways i am not helping either this is a super negative post so can someone help turn it around and help me out with some positivity.

@@doxaholic stay positive for you. I love reading everyone else's post but, I got off here for a little bit to live through my own experience for myself (some post can be overwhelming). I had my surgery 11.22.16 I got home Wed by Thursday morning I walked 4.5miles & have continued today I improve my time by 25mins..this helped me so much with my breathing & pain, I 've been taking advil instead of the pain meds prescribed& I feel great! I've been following the instructions for diet to the T & have had no issues. Reading all the post I realize everyone have their own experiences, their experience are not mines & a lot have to do with mindset & attitude! Find your positive & you'll do great!!!

@@Deuel30 I don't think there's a surgeon out there that wants you taking Advil for pain....it's an NSAID, and will put you at great risk for an ulcer. If you don't want to take the stronger prescribed pain meds, but still feel you need something for pain, just go with Tylenol/acetaminophen. I've heard of peopl developing ulcers who've had surgery, and it can be much more dangerous then in people who have not had surgery.

Great that you're getting in activity, very important in healing.

@doxaholic....yes, you will see good and bad, but I agree with @@Deuel30..it will be what you make it, either positive or negative. We may not have total control over all aspects of what our bodies will go through post op, but we absolutely have control over what we think and are perceptions of situations. And no, not every single minute post op will be all rainbows and butterflies, but, for the most part, I've seen/heard very few who, once things really settle, regret what they did. Stay positive, and it's a journey that has to be your journey, no one else's! Best of luck!

Keep a good attitude and these experiences are experiences which are and can be different. I read them as informational and some ppl do have a hard time, but that is something to learn from and to use what you've learned or heard to give info to help you. And, if it's too much, it's good to take a break.

When I joined this group, all I did was read some posts and do more research and if I had questions, I would post, but, use this as a tool to help you in your WLS journey.

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery date!

@@SharBear thanks for the info. Good thing I haven't had to take it today! I'll stop & ask my surgeon at my 1 week follow up.

Absolutely run this by your surgeon, as they vary widely on their advice based upon their experiences. The NSAID thing is a big NO-NO for the bypass as that procedure has specific problems with those meds that don't necessarily apply to other procedures, but surgeons often carry over their advice from one procedure to another despite the differences. The sleeve and DS are a lot more tolerant to NSAIDS than the bypass, though even non-WLS people should be cautious with consistent use of them. OTOH, Tylenol has relatively low toxicity levels, so care must be taken when using it in place of stronger pain relievers. My doc has no problem with using NSAIDs as soon as narcotic pain relievers are no longer appropriate, but with some 25 years of DS/sleeve experience behind him, and relatively little with the RNY beyond revisions, he has a different background than most bariatric surgeons.

In short, if you have a bypass, Advil is typically a big red NO-NO, but if you have a sleeve or sleeve based procedure like the DS or SIPS/SADI, then it is a maybe - consult your surgeon.

For sure my 2 favorite things since my surgery is the amount of energy I have. I ran for the first time since high school 24 years ago. SEX is another one......let's put it this way without saying to much, I feel like a teenager again! It's crazy that fat kept me from a wonderful fulfilled love life!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
