The sleeve is like a backpack..

Recommended Posts

I was trying to describe what having the sleeve is like, when it comes to eating to my mom. She is curious as to what its like, eating choices, etc.

I thought the best way to describe it to someone who hasn't experienced it is like this:

Say you are headed off on a month long voyage. You only have a small backpack, no suitcases. What would you pack? You'd pack the smallest, most efficient items you could that would be the most helpful along your journey. You would naturally skip the extra stuff that your large suitcases would have allowed. Your choices as to what you pack into you little backpack would be based on usefulness.

This is what my sleeve feels like. When I am choosing food, I'm leaving behind the filler. Just no room in my little backpack.

What a great analogy! I always explain it like the process takes you back through infancy. First you survive on fluids, then soft foods, and then eventually you can add in solid foods, but this time when your learning to eat, you are teaching yourself to eat differently.

This is fantastic. Thanks for sharing !

And also a reminder that one day I really would like to be able to travel with just a backpack. Smaller clothes will help ;-)

She did! It helps so that when I'm visiting with her she understands why I won't want a cookie...or three ;)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
