18 days Post Op and not sure if things are normal or not... Help! :)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I'm after some stories or experiences that may be similar which will stop me from stressing out about basically everything.

I'm 18 days post op and my surgeon has suggested I should be on soft foods now, which I've tried, unsuccessfully. I've met with my nutritionist and she's given me meal plans but everything she's given me isn't working either. I am in intense pain (feels like wind) when I'm eating, it was when I was drinking as well but this has eased off. So I've put myself back on fluids until the pain settles as I'm assuming there should be no discomfort now when trying to eat soft foods?

Even when I'm having Soups I end up with excruciating pain followed by the runs and still being in agony. It's starting to really frighten me to even try to consume anything.

Is this normal? I'm so worried about my nutrition, I'm taking a multi and am trying to add Protein where I can but its so hard when mostly everything you consume gets put back down the toilet bowl. I don't see my surgeon for two weeks and can't physically see him as I have to take a plane there if there was an emergency as I live remotely.

If anyone has any pearls of wisdom to share I'd much appreciate it :)

If its so bad you should really see your GP to be medically checked. It might just be that your body isn't ready for soft foods yet but best to be checked out to stop yourself from worrying. I just wanted to say that I hope you feel better soon

Thanks Kate, have an appt with my GP tomorrow but am just feeling so blah today I'd hoped someone would tell me it's been the same for them and it will get better. Think I'll just stick to my high Protein Drinks until it settles a bit more and stop trying the Soups etc for a bit. :)

I am 11 days out and I feel similar..no dumping tho so I retracted to smoothies and o help my transition..those with fruit veggies(spinach) and Protein powder ..I try one meal (soft food ) at night when I can take my time but eat very little...I call the on call doctor and they told me that the progress from some is slower than others sometimes but continue to get those nutrients in..so I will give it another week and continue to transition to where I need to be..hope you feel better daily????

I'm 5 weeks out and only now able to eat soft foods , still some foods cause me discomfort . I was exactly like you, your still healing and we all do that differently . I was only on puréed stage at your stage out of surgery. Also I had bad stomach through Constipation , you could be full of wind, I was for some time .

I'm not going to lie Ray, it's not been easy but I just have to keep reminding myself about how I struggled to even walk normally etc prior and it keeps me hanging in there. I've had serious dumping issues from eating puréed chicken avocado and cottage cheese so I have no idea what I can actually tolerate. But will be calling my surgeon tomorrow and have a gp appt tomorrow.

Don't worry, so many people have no issues, I'm certain you won't regret it :) (Even though sometimes you do have moments where you do lol)

Oh thanks Lisa, it's easy to get carried away with yourself when it's all so new and your in unchartered waters so to speak.

At least I know that it's not unusual to still be unable to tolerate puréed foods at this stage.

Looking forward to when I can look back at this and be feeling much better :)

My plan had me on liquids for three weeks, then purees for another couple weeks. Didn't try soft foods till 6 weeks out. Even then it was just couple tablespoons/day. I can't imagine transitioning any faster than that. There's no way I could have done soft food at 18 days out. Maybe your sleeve just isn't ready. Go as slow as you need to and stick with what you can tolerate for now. And when you do advance, only add one new thing every few days. That way if you have a bad reaction you know exactly what caused it. you don't feed a new baby formula one day and then stage 2 peas, beef and noodles the next day. Think of your sleeve as a newborn baby.

You mention fruits and vegetables. They were not on my plan during that phase, damn they are barely allowed now. I was mad when I'd read others allowed right away, but looking back I realized I had no issues progressing from phase to phase.

Protein only and teeny tiny bites and chew it until liquid at least 25 times.

I'm 20 days out and I just switched to soft Wednesday. Luckily I have no pain when I eat or really any pain at all. I'm even able to eat toast but have to really chew it all up. You will get there!

When I'm talking about fruits and vegetables Im talking completely sloppy puréed fruit, as in stewed apples or pears etc and vegetables puréed, not just crunching into an apple itself :)

And I can't even tolerate puréed foods at all so I'm still on fluids.

But am looking forward to being able to start on puréed foods without pain :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
