Severe Pain in Left Side Since 1 Day Out of Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had my surgery on Monday (11-14) at noon.

I was sent home on Tuesday afternoon.

I did not pass my scan to check for stomach leaks, due only to the fact that the stuff they gave me to drink never made it down to my stomach, it got stuck in my esophagus which was very swollen. So after the scan, they went ahead and started me on liquids, to see if I could tolerate them. I had no nausea or sickness while drinking the liquids. So they sent me home.

I noticed that I had a lot of pain at 1 of the 4 incision sites, which is one that is located above my belly button (and right on top of an incisional hernia that hasn't been repaired yet). Also, I had pain on my left side, which was nowhere near any of the incisions.

Over the past few days, I have noticed that the 1 incision area is barely hurting anymore, but my left side hurts all the time. I am unable to get myself out of bed without my husband's help. It hurts the worst when I am sitting up or walking, though the pain never does go away completely. Other things that make the pain excruciating are laughing, coughing and sneezing.

Just was wondering if this was normal for any of you other sleevers out there and what your experiences or thoughts were on this matter.

Thank you,

:)Shelley

From what I've read here previously, there is a wide variety of experiences. Some people are in pain for weeks and for others its a breeze.

My incisions hurt for a while, but by Day 3 I was able to sleep on my side and stop all meds. They were sore for like 2 weeks, but bearable after the first few days. Getting up from a reclining position was tough the first week but got better a little bit every day.

I didn't have constant pain in my side like you described. Maybe you should call the doctor, especially given what happened during the scan.

Feel better.

My nurse educator told me that the incision on the left is where the largest trocar is and that left side pain should be expected.

I didn't have the Sleeve. I had the RNY. But around my 8th or 9th day when I got up from my bed, I felt first a sharp pain, then it just wouldn't stop hurting. I finally called my Surgeon. I was told that the left side is where they put the tools thru and some people have so much pain they have to go in for a LIDOCAINE shot. Luckily I didn't I just rode it out. I would call and see if it is normal. You never know.

My left incision was the most painful and I was muscle sore on that side for a couple weeks. If pain is sharp or above a 6 I'd call the surgeon

I had sharp pain in my lower left side on day 5 and though it was the incision pain, but it turned out I had a leak. Just a little over 3 weeks after surgery I was admitted to hospital. It has taken several months to clear the infections and be allowed to eat real food. I won't go into all the details, but I agree with the post that suggested you call your doctor. A GI test or a CT scan will show what's going on. I know if I had gone in sooner I would not have ended up so sick, but I thought that the pain was part of the healing process. When I started to run a temperature and have chills so bad that I couldn't get warm under three blankets is when I knew I had to see my doctor. Good Luck!

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will see how I feel after sleeping tonight and call my doctor tomorrow if I need to.

I would totally call your doctor. You should have never been able to leave the hospital without that scan. With how serious things can get you need to be evaluated

Call your surgeon first thing in the morning. If you have a thermometer, take your temp before calling since she she will probably want to know if you a r running a temp.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
